I swear I've seen charts similar to that before, many times, often ending up quite a bit further south and with colder sources but that kind of blocked cold cyclonic setup has been the bread and butter of much of the last three winters.

Snow falls across Highlands

115461904_01_349844c.jpg

Snow fell across much of the Highlands yesterday, to the delight of Amelia Mentel, 3, above, who went out to play in Kingussie.

The snow spread as far south as Co Durham and Northumberland. Forecasters have predicted more over the next day north of the Border and down the East Coast. Temperatures are not expected to rise much above zero overnight in many areas.

The Local Government Association said that hundreds of gritters were on standby. About 1.3 million tonnes of salt is currently in council depots across England and Wales, about twice as much as was used last winter.

0.7 C, light covering of a few mm of snow; enough to give a little whiteness to everything.

Nice to see some folks got a really decent covering out of this event.

All white here as well........ With frost. -2 and calm. Folks in Nottingham report they have a dusting this morning.

And an exile within the M24 in Hertfordshire reports it too! Nothing to compare with what you must have though. Here are a few photos I took earlier to send back to amuse the family in Scotland post-5195-0-29956300-1351325930_thumb.jppost-5195-0-73032800-1351325961_thumb.jppost-5195-0-18698300-1351326038_thumb.jp

(only a dusting mind but nevertheless a dusting close to London. In October....)

Sadly it has melted rather a lot over night but I still managed to get a few good photos this morning. It is currently 3C.

Fantastic pictures and brilliant wintry scenes!

Another great sunny and cold start with a minimum temperature around -3C.

Only dropped to 0.3oC here last night although it was crystal clear. How odd. As usual, no frost for us in a northerly drift. Anyway, lovely day here with unbroken sunshine at 4.9oC. Wind has now changed to WSW but barometer steady at 1021.9mbs

Some lovely pics by the way!

Just cold & grey today with little wind, bit of a damp squib of a northerly, so no, Blitzen, the longjohns stayed safely tucked away in the drawer. I spect they'll be out before too long tho, have to mend the holes!

Afternoon all. Been a lurker for a couple of years now and decided join in during rather exceptional weather last night. Great pics from GJ. Snow disappearing as quickly as it came but maybe just a wee taster of what the rest of autumn/winter might throw up.

Spent 3/4 hours this morning watching the young one in a football tournament. Just thawing out now. Cold and cloudy.

Min this morning -1.7C which with the breeze was pretty penetrating.

Raining. Which means the end of the "brief" arctic spell but still chilly though (will there be more to come though) ;)

A horrible cloudy and dull day here with some showers passing though as well. Wind gusting over 30mph and temp 10c.

Tonight across Scotland not as cold as yesterday only down to 2c in the Highlands and elsewhere 4c to 10c.

On Sunday it will start off cloudy with heavy rain for everywhere but by the afternoon it should dry up a bit to sunny spells with showers. Sunday evening becomes more dry also misty. Sunday night mainly dry and partly cloudy with a few showers around in the Highlands. The wind on Sunday mainly a strong breeze but gale force winds continue over the West and North.

This was Melvich beach, north-west Sutherland, on Thursday afternoon as the northerly was just starting to build up a head of steam. The beach faces north!

I spent a few fun minutes running up & down the beach between some very fast moving slabs of foam - it was seriously cold even so. Full winter clothing and then I was back in the car. And still haven't had a chance to swap for the winter tyres - running on 3/4 worn Goodrich ATs now which are good for awful site tracks but not icy tarmac. Hmmm... priority No 1 for next week is... yes, patch the longjohns!

Now raining a bit here...

Morning. 7.7oC. breezy, damp. Looks as if this type of weather will remain at quo for the next 7-10 days or so, looking at the overnights. May become very windy around Halloween?
