Lots of reports in midlands thread that the stuff that is now currently currently over MK and Northampton isn't reaching the surface

Judging by the lack of any snow reports and bearing in mind Snowking's comments, I think it's pretty clear that the blob showing up on the radar and sliding down the Suffolk / Essex coast is not producing anything at ground level. This is known as anaprop.

Therefore anyone south of here who was looking forward to some exciting lamppost watching should lower their expectations!

Just as we were all hoping for some 'evaporative cooling', the sodding stuff is evaporating completely away!

It may not be anaprop but there could be a very dry layer in the atmosphere stopping any precips hitting the floor

ANAPROP - ANomAlous PROPagation - when radar microwaves are refraction by things like inversions down to the ground, and are then reflected back to the dish - as far as the radar is concerned, something is there, and so it displays it as a return, but it is not precip.

That Murr bloke, like him or loath him, He knows his stuff. (I like him as he is a coldy)

Shirley the radar is seeing more than a couple of Ford Fiestas in a Tescos car park and not giving false positives.

I just came for a peek in here guys, to see how your getting on! Would just like to say, apparently; the radar is picking up the precip, but it's evaporating before it gets to ground! Same is happening over here! :(

Well according to the latest radar, the precip is around Bletchey. Just checked out the BBC weather website; it says we're not expecting light snow until 5am.

Can't see this front dying out at all either.

Oh that clears something up as I thought it was a medical complaint.

Yes indeed, good point, in this kind of low temperature set up that is very possible.

Aye, that I did, SK...Nothing since, I might add...

Snowking, we've had precip over our heads for about 45 mins now in Northampton, apart from an odd flurry, nothing to report.

Thanks for the reports!

So it is a case seemingly of the precip is there above your heads, its just struggling to make it to the surface.

My rain alarm has just gone off....should I be watching the radar and my lampost instead of dancing on ice then, I wasn't expecting anything yet unknw.gif

I would advise watching the lamp-post instead even if nothing were falling..... biggrin.png

But in all seriousness its worth keeping an eye out, looks as though its taking a while for the precip to be intense enough to make it all the way to the ground, which is making the radars a little useless today, worth keeping an eye on!

SK
