Another major March snowstorm occurred on 4th March 1970. Very heavy snow in parts of Beds, Northants, Kent, Sussex and the S.E. in general.

I think I remember reading that miners were stranded under ground in the old East Kent coalfield at Betteshanger/Tilmanstone, when power lines were brought down.

What are the chances of getting home from work in London on Monday evening if these charts verify - are we talking about disruption to the railways?

i would hold fire and look again on friday

if they verified the chances of disruption would be there

Evening all,

Catching up on the model output which I haven't viewed much of late though it does certainly scream potential as at stands for a decent spring cold blast (depending on your preference!), for which we haven't seen one for 5 years. Considering what the charts are showing (particularly ECM, GFS) I'd be pretty disappointed if we didn't see some snowfall. Sunday and Monday look pretty bitter in a very cold wind. I hope this upcoming cold spell doesn't drag on for too long as admittidly I'm after a spell of spring-like weather! However, I'll be happy with this cold spell if it does deliver, in terms of snowfall.

Sometime ago was doing a display in late April and had spent the night in a period tent,it had been very cold during the night and come the morning I walked outside to be greated by 4 inches of snow,so to those who gave up on the winter...get your woolies back out rofl.gif

Just popped in to see if we're still game on for some wintryness acute.gif

oh' boy this is getting interesting.... rain turning to snow on Sunday now? - BUT still the UKMO charts seem cautious. despite what the gfs/ecm etc have been for a long while now..

Looking at the temps today it's hard to imagine what it'll feel like come the weekend - must get more logs for the fire cold.gif

Anyone travelling from Clapham Junction to Waterloo tomorrow will need to double check as there has been a complete loss of signal between these stations which is affecting train services - no trains in and out of Waterloo station

Excellent John! I did see that the first 20 days of March 1845 had a CET of less than zero (and I think the 13th March 1845 was the coldest recorded March day in England) but I bow to your greater research. :)
