Yellow Warning of Snow for London & South East England :

Hampshire, Oxfordshire, West Berkshire, Buckinghamshire & Milton Keynes

Yellow Warning of Snow for East of England :

Central Bedfordshire

Rain is likely to turn to snow in places this morning, bringing the risk of temporary accumulations of 3-7 cm, especially on hills. Rain and snow will ease from the south later this morning. The public should be aware of this wintry hazard, with this update pulling the boundary of the warning a little further northeast across Oxfordshire into parts of Buckinghamshire, west Berkshire and Northamptonshire.

Issued at:

0843 on Sun 17 Mar 2013

Valid from:

0600 on Sun 17 Mar 2013

Valid to:

1200 on Sun 17 Mar 2013

A small depression coming off the English Channel will bring some heavy rain across the area, which will fall into cold air as it comes inland. This will give the risk of settling snow, though with marked variations in amounts from place to place. There is also a risk of heavy hail temporarily lying on road surfaces leading to slippery conditions.

Amazing how confined this morning's snow event is to central southern England up to SE Midlands, looking at recent obs - a narrow area from Salisbury Plain up through Oxon to Bedfordshire according to stations where dew points are 0-1C, to the west DPs of +2C and to the east DPs of 4-5C mean rain instead

Nice to see snow for some this morning. GFS0.5 pretty good at highlighting these areas this morning (as it should be 3hrs out I guess!) Looks like it could be one of those weeks particularly for those in the north of the region with possible snow events depending on how heavy ppn can get and probably overnight falling temps and elevation. Currently looks more like rain further south but the margins for error are so small with north/south position of the cold uppers that I guess anyone is in with a chance of some white stuff throughout the week, another cold week for the time of year!smile.png

Aliitle frustrated to say the least. Heavy snow reported in Northampton, and im in west Cambs, about 30 miles east of that. Sun it out here, and had a couple of light rain showers. Ah well, good luck to all those that see snow today....

I would think that elevation is also playing a part in the reports of snow as here in Kempston we have had just showers of very heavy rain through the morning.

I notice from the web cam in Oxford that they have deployed workmen with snow shovels to clear the pathsbiggrin.png

Been some very heavy snow at times this morning here. It does change to rain during the lighter drizzle pulses though. Some massive flakes as well. 2 pound coin sized at one point. A covering of around an inch on grass, cars, bins and roof surfaces. Roads and driveways clear though.

Interestingly the temperature peaked at 3.1C about 11:45am but has now fallen back to 2.7C. Despite the relatively high temperatures it doesn't seem to have stopped it snowing. Minimum temp was 1.8C this morning.

(Location - 2/3 miles south of Oxford)

2.7c is still cold enough for snow. Even 6c is still cold enough for snow too. It depends on the upper cold feed which can be as cold as 0c for snow to fall. The intensity of the ppn is in play here contributing to the cooling effect.

PS......According to the radar, you will have a brief clear period for approx 15-30 mins and then pulses of heavy ppn will batter Oxford with snow. Expect big snowflakes biggrin.png

Snow at 6C could be fun. Almost t-shirt weather that.

Is there anyone up in the Chilterns around Stokenchurch area how deep is it up there?
