Well... I am certainly not sleeping tonight! It's still 29oC in my room with the windows wide open! and then all these insects started coming in dispite me having a fly netting up (Some of it has come away in the corners a little) so then I decided to go and get our UV bug zapper thing but all that did was attract more flies from outside and we also have a bees nest living in our wall and one must have seen the light and broken into the room to then get zapped and have a bee spazm on my window sill... I have no turned the thing off because I actually really like bee's and it was clearly not working..

THEN 1 of the atleast 6 Daddy Long Legs flew down from the ceiling and managed to get stuck between my glasses lense and my eye ball.. It was a HORRIFIC experience and one I would never like to re-live!

Currently hiding under my duvet, sweating buckets and attempting to slowly drift off... meeeeeh!

Still way off in FI but not without support, this spell could fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your viewpoint be just a mere first course of heat.

Wouldn't be surprised, the heat is building...

when i go to my allotment in the evening to water my crops, i get all kinds of insects flying around me, and although they don't harm me they are incredibly annoying as they keep landing on my face, i even covered myself in insect repellent but that didn't do anything, but no hot weather no crops, so although i prefer warm weather not hot weather my crops love the heat, so there are always positives and negatives to everything

I don't understand it? Would you sit in the living room in the pitch dark with no TV on? Do people do it just because they can? What's to see except darkness?

We have these clever things down south called "outdoor lights", lets you sit out in the garden once it's dark & you can still see ;)

Over on the SE/EA forum a regular poster there is saying the current temperature where he lives ( Buntingford, near Stevenage ) is 13.9c outside. How on earth have you managed to get an indoor temperature of 29c at all, let alone this time of night ?? Genuine question. The outside temperature reached 29.5c here today, but my indoor temperature never got above 23c. I don't have any fans or air con, just left a couple of doors and windows open with the blinds drawn in the room where the sun was on. Indoor temperature now is 21.5c.

Hiding under a duvet is harldy conducive to cooling off either is it ?

oh hey... You seem very blunt? why? and well it is now 18.9oC outside and Accuweather backs me up here!

http://www.accuweather.com/en/gb/st-albans/al1-3/weather-forecast/328488

and well, that's what you live in a south facing house in a corner room where the sun shines directly on the 2 walls from sunrise till around 3/4pm! Oh and I had my windows in my room shut in the morning and open in the evening which I suppose doesn't help and it is now down to 26.7oC in my room now that I have moved my fan from the windowsil to next to my bed...

and I am hiding under the duvet to get away from the flies... OH AND it only got to 28.4oC here too! My room is just always incredibly hot and I genuinly have no idea why and we have had all doors and windows open in the rest of the house all day.....

Oh and 19oC in buntingford too!

My apologies. I didn't mean to sound blunt, I was just quite staggered to hear that you had an indoor temperature of 29c, and perhaps could have worded my post differently.

Just a suggestion, and this may sound daft but after many years of shift work and trying to sleep during warm weather, be it night or day, I can confirm this actually works. Dispense with the duvet, store it in a cupboard for now, and just use the duvet cover. Very lightly spray it with tap water shortly before going to bed. I have suggested this to a number of people who initially thought I was mad, but have since confirmed it has made sleep a lot easier in warm/hot weather.

Apology of course accepted :) and well it's not unusual to have temperatures of 29oC in my room during a hot summer day, the temperature is ALWAYS atleast 2oC above the outside temperatures as long as the sun is shining!

And hey! I wont knock it till I've tried it! I will do it tomorrow night and see how it goes :) Thankyou! :)

My room was up at 28c.....if the sun is shining on your house all day it will get that warm.

I am finding this all very uncomfortable - personally the heat just makes me feel lethargic and the poor sleeping conditions do not help.

UK hot weather to last until next weekend, say forecasters

Saturday was hottest July day since 2006, peaking at 31.9C in Southampton

The recent blazing temperatures in the UK are set to linger into the start of the school summer break, according to forecasters.

Saturday was the hottest day of the year so far and the hottest July day since 2006, with the mercury peaking at 31.9C (89.4F) in Southampton. The hot spell of weather will last into next weekend when many primary and secondary schools will have finished for the year and the six-week summer holiday will stretch ahead. On Sunday temperatures will dip slightly but are still likely to top 30C (86F) in England and Wales, particularly in the south.

Temperatures for the rest of the week will range between the mid to high 20s, with the exception of Wednesday which could top 32C. Gareth Harvey, forecaster for the MeteoGroup, said on Sunday: "Today is going to be another hot day, not quite as hot as yesterday but a few places will see 30C. There will be a bit of cloud across eastern areas and a few sharp showers in the south-east but it will still be very pleasant. It will be cooler in Northern Ireland and Scotland, where it only reached 24C (75.2F) yesterday."

The heatwave has prompted warnings from health authorities urging the public to take care in the potentially dangerous conditions. Retailers and supermarket giants reported booming sales figures as the soaring heat saw shoppers spend thousands on the high street and in an online blitz on barbecues, food, sunscreen and garden furniture. Asda said sales of barbecues had risen 204% in the past two weeks, with charcoal and fuel up 176%. It said paddling pool sales were up 446% and garden furniture up 44% as Britons dined al fresco.

Last weekend alone Asda sold 3m sausages and 1.4m burgers. Tesco predicted it would sell 9m sausages this weekend and sales of its summer fruits soared. Emergency services warned against swimming in open waters and quarries after three people died in the West Midlands in the past week. John Woodhall, a water rescue specialist with West Midlands ambulance service, said: "How many more people need to die before someone takes notice of our warnings of the dangers of swimming in open waters?

"Quarries are not like swimming pools. The water is much colder. You go from 28C outside to 10C (50F) in the water. You can get muscle cramps and stitches. The bottom is uneven. There are no depth markings. Even strong swimmers can slip underwater and you may not make it back up again." Commander George Marshall, of Hereford and Worcester fire and rescue service, said: "Please think twice about going into open water and if you must take a dip please do it in the safety of a public swimming pool where there are lifeguards on duty."

Superintendent Ivan Powell, of West Mercia police, echoed the message, saying: "Particularly in view of the current hot spell we would urge people not to go into rivers, lakes, ponds and canals to try to cool off. People need to recognise the risks associated with water and act responsibly."

Our bedroom will go up to 28c or so when the sun is out but soon cools off in the evening due to the skylight being right above the bed.

The super way this place keeps its cool almost makes it worth the other 10 months of it being 'that bit too chilly' or, as she puts it 'ruddy freezing all the time'.

edit - Today is clear & sunny - deep blue skies and warm at 21.3c at 0900 after 14.7c low.

No low cloud anywhere to be seen - much better feel to things without an easterly present!

MoD will not cancel training exercises after soldiers' deaths, despite more hot weather to come

The Ministry of Defence has refused to cancel any training exercises following the death of two soldiers who collapsed during a session on the hottest day of the year.

My apologies to you too from earlier,Bb!  I think today I may have a heart attack or stroke - on afternoon shift at work during the hottest part of the day. Great in winter as it's warm in there but today it'll break 45C no sweat (pun intended). I'd like to try the damp duvet-cover trick but not sure if the missus would let me...... I think my (in)tolerance to this weather has kinda plateaued now, and I accept that I've just gotta ride it out. Hopefully when this blocked spell collapses it'll be replaced by an equally protracted stormy one just in time for autumn, which then gives way to relentless northern blocking just in time for winter.... last thing I want is some type of Indian summer - that'd be rubbing salt into the wounds, big time.

The French foreign legion train in the middle of the Sahara in Algeria. The Brecon Beacons in 30C is tame by comparison. As long as they provide enough water I have no problem with them continuing the exercises. Coping with extreme weather is part and parcel of being a soldier.

Surely they need to cope with Welsh 'heat' if they're ever to go to places where it really gets hot?

Warmer than yesterday (no surprise being cloud free today) now 23.4c.

Hope this carries on in the same way Dec 2010 went on for ages - or how winter 2012/2013 dragged on forever!
