Met Office forecast maps started showing a few 28C's yesterday evening and still show some today for Sunday and Monday:post-7593-0-21032600-1373008205_thumb.pnpost-7593-0-23856700-1373008213_thumb.pn

Wouldn't be surprised if it was a degree or two higher locally and the MetO or BBC forecasts seem to think that too.

My take on this warm spell ... highs will generally settle into the 28-30 C range inland with one or two places perhaps as high as 32 but mid-week, a very shallow incursion of cooler air in the east will tend to force a weak frontal boundary running north-south through western parts of Britain and eastern Ulster. This could produce isolated showers and thunderstorms but I don't foresee widespread cloudiness, the cooler eastern region at that time will probably still be mostly sunny but just a few degrees cooler inland (22-25 C) and noticeably cooler near the coast (15-18 C). More of a haze than a sea fog seems likely because of very dry conditions in the air mass.

This won't quite be like the famous hot spells of the past because the upper support (at least as depicted on all models so far) is just one level shy of that record-producing set-up, so instead of days into the 30s and daily means that reach 22-24 C I would expect more like days reaching high 20s and means 19-21 C. Even so, there are hints on some models that a stronger heat wave could develop eventually after that mid-week interruption (in east).

Wind speeds will be very low in general so all coasts are likely to see a sea breeze regime, but sea breeze boundaries will probably just be marked by a bit of cumulus rather than anything more dramatic, most of the time, except possibly Tuesday as the cooler incursion develops, then Wednesday when a weak frontal boundary can work with sea breeze boundaries to enhance local storminess. An early guess on where one or two storms could develop would be west Midlands to south central inland.

Things warming up gradually in Cork, 16C now.

The usually conservative Met Eireann are going for 20-25C in Ireland today, yet the GFS suggests no higher than 22C. It will be interesting to see what happens...

Come on then, someone take a stab at when, where and maybe even if the 30°C mark will be breached?

On Sunday I'll go for somewhere to just scrape 30C, somewhere in southern counties like Hampshire quite possibly, close to the south coast but not too close to it where sea breezes could develop later and knock the max back a degree or two. Maybe somewhere like Southampton.

Or perhaps west/SW of London somewhere like Wisely on Sunday. It won't be anywhere east of London due to a surface flow off the sea though.

If it happens next week on lets say Tuesday I'd go for somewhere further west, perhaps somewhere like the Somerset levels or Cheltenham area could get close.

Creeping above 17C now, but beginning to turn a little cloudy... 25C seems like a big ask today!

Very slow rising here - think this haze is reducing the suns power a bit. Still sure it'll make it to the predicted 24c as its 20.2c so far.

so where's this "summer scorcher" again....hazy sunshine at best and now starting to grey and cloud over here (surprise surprise)...be surprised if we top 20c at this rate, never mind 30c....

The Satellite images don't show much cloud around NW England at the moment, but it's only forecast to be the low 20's in NW England today anyway.

Although actually looking at the Met Office site the maps show onshore/sea breezes in NW England so you could find maxima a bit disappointing there depending on how close to the coast you are unfortunately

It's that annoying higher level white veil cloud we often get around here. It's just taking the shine off the day. Some blue showing through here and there now.

Sky is not blue here either - very milky. Not stopping the sun of course but filtering it a bit. Perhaps less haze tomorrow as the air dries out?
