Evening all :) According to the Danish Weather Service, London is -2c at present so a frost setting in but as others have said, the fog has cleared. I presume we have now imported some drier air from the Continent. http://www.dmi.dk/vejr/ Great map for moving round Europe and looking at temps - London currently colder than most of northern and eastern Europe.

DMI is quite good, we have used their site to great effect for Heli flights out to the rigs. It's quite mild here in Esbjerg, wind has a bit of a bite, but warmer than Crawley, wife reported that there was quite a good frost this morning and by the looks of it will be again tonight.Hope the fog clears for my flight back to London City Airport on Friday evening.

Can you give us the best time to go out tomorrow evening - assuming it's still there cometing - I'd love to see it and remember the one in the mid '90s which was really lit up with a beautiful tail just at sunset. I'd like to see another.

In evening time, it'll be as soon as dark enough to see it, so probably after 5:30. The problem being that it'll 'set' - drop below the horizon - later in the evening, until the early hours - it isn't circumpolar from where we are, as it's currently at approx. 30 degrees north (circumpolar means always in sight, as stars appear to rotate around the Pole Star, e.g. The Plough, whose stars are mostly more than 50 degrees north and stars need to be that far north)

Another problem with evening viewing is the Moon, which is bright and still waxing and washes out the sky to a degree. I'm going to be up early in the morning - 5:30 - to see if I can spot it again, fog / cloud allowing. the Moon will have set by then.

Actually looking at this link (I've literally just found...) I'd almost forget it. I wish I'd tried to spot it a couple of weeks ago. This is faint and fading. Magnitude 8 is well below naked eye visibility. Posted Image

I can't believe this was only discovered 3 months ago, by a bloke with a pretty small telescope!Posted Image

Anyone else worried about the Christmas period? I think the deep cold over North America could fuel a very powerful jet stream and with the likelihood of it tracking south, might make for some vicious depressions affecting us, over what is traditionally quite a stormy period.

With St Jude's and the storm surge, I've had my fill of windstorms for the season, so hope my worries aren't justified.

Agree with you totally Steve, wind is the one type of extreme weather I don't like. I think it's the unpredictability of it.

I do find it exciting, but it's the (inevitable) destruction element I don't like. When I was a kid I loved it all - I didn't properly think...

Or should that read think of property! I can remember the 'excitement' clearing up after '87 but then it wasn't me that had to sort out the repairs and deal with the insurance companies. No matter whether we worry or not the weather will do what it pleases after all it's Mother Nature and as she's female there is no amount of persuading that will work on her.As an aside thick frost outside and a light mist slowly creeping down the road from the fields.

these ensembles are all over the place

rainfall up agrees from the 15th

earlier runs show the strong winds 22nd

so as we know lows are hard to predict at 2 days away

so do not concern yourself with this yet

got a lot of fax runs before that would come into range

I've just looked outside. Definitely frost, but no fog here yet - I was half hoping it was going to be a bit foggy, so I'd have an excuse to lie in bed longer and not get up to try and spot the faint comet!

  • April 2024 - Was it that cold overall? A look at the statistics

General perception from many is that April was a cold month, but statistics would suggest otherwise, with the average temperature for the whole month coming in just above the 30 year average for the UK as a whole. A warm first half to to the month averaged out the cold second half. View the full blog here
