Good too see some reports of snowfall... its just been moderate rain here with the rare occasion of a few odd flakes mixed in.

Its typical how it turned out because everything is right really, off shore wind, slow shower activity and yet the air is perhaps just not quite cold enough. A opportunity of getting at least a bit of lying snow well and truely missed.

Yep, all rather disappointing.

We're missing out on a covering of snow thanks to being a degree or so in temperature the wrong side of marginal!

It has stopped quite soon after my last up date. No not high really. 40m or so but it is noticeable the difference from here to Middlesbrough four miles down the hill

Had on/off rain showers for the last hour or so.

No doubt these will fall as snow in Consett!

To be honest JP the most recent one a few minutes ago is a lot more sleety than those we had in the last 4hrs and is making the few cm of snow we have a bit more compressed. Perfect snow for playing snowball chase with the hound.

I thought it surprising how temperatures are holding up - there is a bit of wind and some cloud.
Still +1C here and looks similar quite widely.
Ground temps below freezing though.

So a full calender year and 21 months without any snow on the ground for us in Darlington

All we've had this winter so far is some very wet 'snow' on the 11th which isn't worth talking about IMO

Yellow warning for strong winds issued for parts of the region

Issued at: 1037 on Thu 8 Jan 2015

Valid from: 2200 on Thu 8 Jan 2015

Valid to: 1000 on Fri 9 Jan 2015

A vigorous depression is expected to run rapidly east, passing northern Scotland early on Friday. This is likely to give a period of very strong westerly winds across much of Scotland, northern coastal areas of Northern Ireland, and the far north of England on Thursday night and during Friday morning. Gusts of 60-70 mph are likely. The strongest winds are expected to affect the Western Isles, Orkney and northern and northwestern parts of the mainland, and a separate Amber warning covers these areas. A further Amber warning covers the Central Belt of Scotland. Winds should quickly ease from the west in the morning. The public should be aware of the potential for disruption, for example to transport and power supplies.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

A vigorous depression is expected to develop over the Atlantic during Thursday in association with a very strong jet stream. The depression is likely to run rapidly east northeast to pass northern Scotland early on Friday bringing a brief period of very strong winds to many northern areas of Britain. There is now high confidence in the track and timing of this system, and the strongest winds are covered in associated Amber warnings. However, gusts of 60 to 70 mph still bring the potential for some localised wind damage and disruption and the public should keep up to date with the latest warnings.

Covers Northumberland & Durham only

Snow and Ice warning issued for all the region

Issued at: 1057 on Thu 8 Jan 2015

Valid from: 0600 on Sat 10 Jan 2015

Valid to: 1200 on Sun 11 Jan 2015

Heavy showers are likely across the warning area, these falling as snow at low levels across much of Scotland and Northern Ireland, but over high ground further south. Within the area there could be localised small snow accumulations away from immediate coasts at low levels in the north, whilst over high ground 5-15 cm may occur in places. Temperatures will fall significantly during Saturday, this also posing the risk of ice where showers occur. The public should be aware of the risk of some difficult driving conditions.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

A strong, cold, unstable northwesterly airstream will affect the UK on Saturday and at first on Sunday, bringing showers across many northern and western regions, some of which heavy. Showers will fall as snow to low levels at times in the north and over high ground further south within the warning area. As temperatures are expected to take a plunge, icy conditions are also likely on some roads. Snow showers will also be accompanied by strong or very strong winds and this will likely give blizzard conditions over higher ground, leading to treacherous driving conditions on higher routes.

This winter is descending into a borefest in terms of cold and snow.

Maybe next winter ...
