The wind should ease down during the day but its likely to pick up again this evening and overnight with gusts close to 60mph in some areas

Tomorrow temperatures will plummet from around 14c in the early hours to just 2 or 3c by tomorrow teatime which could see some snow especially but not exclusively on higher parts

Quite a shock to the system this time tomorrow with temperatures near freezing!

One of those really interesting set ups where this morning started off cold and very windy then things died down and the day was fairly average and now tonight the wind is picking up and the temperature is shooting up rapidly, then we got the potential of a squally front heading through the region following on tomorrow by much colder weather with the risk of sleet and snow showers although i imagine east of high ground won't see much in the way of shower activity mind.

Can't complain the weather is boring thats for sure!

Next 24 hours sort of conditions mid west of USA experiences in winter (though nothing on the scale of extreme they endure) , marked warm sector followed by a very marked cold sector behind a potent squally cold front - temps will take nose dive in a short space of time.

Certainly can't describe current conditions as benign and uninteresting - about as variable as our weather gets.

In any heavy precipitation especially when dusk sets in, low ground could see a covering of snow.

Uppers are similar to 12/13 Dec when we had 2 surprise snowfalls, though winds were much lighter then.

The fells about to get a good pasting over next 7 days - currently they are green.

The change in airmass is well highlighted when comparing the dewpoints for 10pm today with the same time tomorrow.

We had one gust of 62mph about 11pm rattled things a bit - otherwise fairly normal blustery gusty night mostly around 50mph.
Not seen any damage yet.
December 2013 it touched 72mph so a way off that (still no damage)

It tends to be very noisy upstairs at night though.
That's two nights running it was tempting to move downstairs so as not to be occasionally woke up by all the buffeting noises - never did though.

Had one or two heavy shortlived hail showers here - the polysterene type hail.

Temp of 5.3 degrees.

Good chance places with modest height will catch some snow showers later this afternoon and through the evening, with perhaps a cover down to 200 metres, lower where any precipitation is heavy.

On the 13th December we had a surprise snow shower under milder uppers than forecast overnight- it is a set up ripe for 'surprise snowfalls', however, we do have a much stronger wind.

Another yellow warning issued for strong winds for the NE this one is for Monday

Issued at: 1055 on Sat 10 Jan 2015

Valid from: 0300 on Mon 12 Jan 2015

Valid to: 1800 on Mon 12 Jan 2015

Another rapidly deepening area of low pressure is expected to move east-northeast just to the north of Scotland during Monday. Gusts of 50-60 mph are likely widely through the warning area, with gusts as high as 70 mph in western exposure, and possibly to the east of high ground. The public should be aware of the risk of disruption to transport.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

Conditions look conducive for another rapidly deepening area of low pressure to run quickly east-northeast to the north of the UK during Monday. There remains some uncertainty on the exact track of this developing low pressure system, and therefore the areas at greatest risk of disruptive winds. Therefore, this warning will be reviewed again on Sunday for both coverage and likely impacts.

Mmm eyes probably should be on prospects for mid next week - all models are showing a potentially very viscious nasty storm with the track over Scotland - dependent on track much of our region could be exposed to the worst of the winds. Expect early weather warnings to appear tomorrow evening I would guess - possibly of the amber variety. The models won't have a handle though on the intensity and track just yet, but a more southerly positioned storm similar to yesterday's would put a much wider swathe of greater population under risk of severe/storm force winds. It could be downgraded and track further north, but I'm not so sure..

Powdery snow in Darlington bodes well for later on when temps will drop even further

The showers are rattling through very quick here given the strength of the wind still blue sky in sight again now

Humidity and dewpoints have gone way down, this also makes it feel colder on top of windchill which already is below freezing

Mainly rain and sleet showers here at the minute, had a fairly potent wet snow shower around 1pm which bodes well for tonight - my main concern is that the wetness and puddles on the ground from last night and this morning will melt any light snow showers tonight leaving us needing a very heavy when to get any significant lying snow - but to be honest falling snows a bonus given the abysmal state of this winter so far.
