Seems to be gradually dying down now. Apart from a little activity later in the south west I think that's it now for most of us.

It's a gust front (outflow boundary), where the cold air coming out of the storm is meeting the air around the storm :)

Well, what a day for you people in South Yorks and the Gloucestershire/Welsh borders area! Most of northern England, in fact, too.

Am right jealous of the action you got today. Surely some supercells from the pictures posted?

Bone dry in South-East England.....yawn......

Most active storm in living memory in Shropshire,  the thunder was constance/ lightning trigger on the camera constantly triggering.

I have never heard thunder like it, constant train noise rolling non stop for 30-40 minutes.

Strike rate recorded 202 per minute during the most active part.

I've never seen the sky constantly lit up like that, not even during the July 1995 one. And the thunder was constant, one boom started before the last was finished. Was like being underneath an aerial battle with all the noise and light.

some decent lightning for over an hour or so,   much in the distance, but recent cell came in overhead from the warringtom direction, with vivid dusk lightning and close booms, but as soon as i come on here to report its all completely stopped, no thunder anymore,  so there you have it , coming on netweather jinxes storms,  ah well at least we got something :D  and well done to the met office/bbc for getting it right

Looking good for the north of England. Pity the stuff to the south of us doesn't get organized.

I'll remind you of that when you start the incessant moaning of not having any storms in the future  :p

Heres a couple of pics from earlier, I was mostly just enjoying the storms rather than watching them through a lense but I snapped what I thought were some interesting cloud scapes and skies :)

They were doing the helicopter trips at Owler Bar, and as you can see it's heading away from the explosive convection. Wise move!

Still haven't had a good thunderstorm since September 2014 here, very depressing. Still waiting for lightning but looks like general rain. Ah well, we all knew tonight would be a damp squib.
