Pouring down! The smallest hint of slush... 3.4c, cold and wet - Awful!

Sounds exactly like the rotten muck we had last night....when it stopped, roads flooded all over, fields waterlogged and muddy.

As cold spells go, this one is a heap of dog eggs.

Despite the very mild start to Winter and a few hiccups like Winter 2013-14 I do think since 2009 we are still in a cycle of colder than normal cold spells with more cold/snow potential than we had in the late 90's and most of the 00's. If this cold spell projected carries on like it is supposed to do then this seems even more believable.

Cold uppers not due over most of the region until the early hours

Meto have been bang on so far this winter, snow was never forecast

For lower levels this evening,so no surprise its raining.

My local forecast for morning on met office website saying rain not even sleet. It's gone from snow to sleet and now rain. Pretty much been downgraded the closer we've got to tomorrow. Will probably be bone dry on next update

What a world of difference a few miles makes.. heavy snow in Ambleside just 4 miles up the road (lower elevation as well) thanks to the power of evaporative cooling, just plain old rain here... thanks to the precipitation being light. Fairly confident in heavier bursts the rain will quickly turn to snow, however, our greatest chance for significant snow is most likely tomorrow evening when we won't need the aid of evaporative cooling and that goes not just for here, but much of the region away from the coast, city/town centres and the very lowest ground.

Hoping to wake up to a covering of snow tomorrow, which should stick around for sometime given the projected low temps we are forecast through to early next week at least. Fells are taking a pounding..

Snowing in Buxton with 2x roads closed due to ice. Just sleet here for now but at 210m once the colder air begins to dig-in it'll soon be turning to the white stuff.

  • April 2024 - Was it that cold overall? A look at the statistics

General perception from many is that April was a cold month, but statistics would suggest otherwise, with the average temperature for the whole month coming in just above the 30 year average for the UK as a whole.
