No doubt the weekend will be cooler ,but as for the so called 'Cold Spell' the whole thing has been extremely disappointing ,Rain again today , temps at 5c, can't believe the BBC are still talking about the bitter cold ,I was in Sweden over new year and daytime temps were about -3-4c and at night down to -10c, that is a cold spell , it got even colder after we left...I think we've become soft  and too used to mild damp rubbish

Hi all

resident of NI here. Usually take part in the Ireland discussion thread. However I'm flying into Manchester Monday morning and in Manchester Monday night. Driving to Blackburn on Tuesday afternoon and back to Manchester on Tuesday night with a flight home on Wednesday morning.

I'm no good at reading models or anything, what's the general consensus on the weather in that part of the country on Monday / Tuesday / Wednesday?

Bit worried about driving my hire car if there's going to be any snow or ice. Had a bad experience in Liverpool last time I had a hire car (kids throwing bricks from railway station that hit my car)

Any info would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

You wont have any worries in blackburn...most snowless town in britain....more chance of snow in ethiopa than blackburn ...lol.

Hmm... interesting. The temperature has been rising a fair bit in the last 40 minutes or so. It was almost -2C here, but now it has risen to -0.4C. There must be a bit of an moderating influence from the Irish Sea coming in.

no cloud coming in? mine rises fast when cloud rolls in

Uh oh....... SE breeze tomorrow night means hardly any snow for most of Greater Manchester. Unless there is another mechanism that will help it be different?

Another day and again sudden developments occurring making a mockery of the forecast. Trough/shortwave feature to the NW popping up out of nowhere to spoil what was looking like a dry weekend.. alas cloud set to invade throughout tomorrow and Sunday certainly not going to be dry.. on the plus side we should see some snow tomorrow night and into Sunday.

It is a light southeasterly flow so no precipitation shadow for Manchester.

Let's hope that the track of the band remains the same :)

Have to disagree. SSE wind seems much more likely. ( and at least above the surface a more westerly component seems likely ) probably a light shadow

I'd be worried for a shadow if the wind was projected to be strong.

No doubt if I get ppn tomorrow evening it will be rain here near the coast at low elevation just like today with -7c 850's it was just wet! As far as I'm concerned it can keep away so I have a chance to get a decent frost with clear skies instead of 4/5c and rain! Hopefully get a half decent cold spell before winters over with no marginality involved for anyone! Nothing marginal during March 2013 and yet here we are in mid winter and it's pants lol :p On the plus side it's -0.3c atm!!

Best thing to happen tonight is a huge drop in temp, then to cloud a bit tomorrow to stop any diurnal heating, to give the temps the biggest knock. A max of 1-2c is a blessing for tomorrow. Let's see what it brings.

The 18z gfs has the precipitation much further west and lighter so the majority of the region misses out.

This is what the BBC has been saying this evening too.

On the flip side dew points and surface temperatures are looking good for the Monday event, at least the first part of it.

In all fairness, a lack of precipitation tomorrow night may mean a bigger chance of snow on Monday.

This could be good for a colder period Sunday/Monday as the warm sector is now forced SW.

But ECM and Euro 4 say further E. ECM in-between Euro4 and GFS so I'd take that as a middle ground and puts us right in the sweet spot.

A couple of snow showers this afternoon but other than in the shade, it seemed to soon disappear.

its a shame that such a lovely bright winters day can be spoilt by showers that once again failed to live up to expectations and I'd have preferred the showers to keep away if that's the best it could do.

-2c now under clear skies so at least the ground should be ready for tomorrow night last minute let down.

Just back from Tenerife. What a contrast between here and Tenerife it was 32C there and minus 2 here.  Another downgrade for snow here? Nowt changed here.
