And down here in Hampshire, we will wake up the next day and say what was all the fuss about

The so called storm will have little effect on anyone south of a line from North Wales to Hull in my opinion.

To rub salt in the winter wounds it's been snowing in the Sahara desert in the last few days https://www.google.co.uk/amp/www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/12/20/stunning-photos-capture-rare-snow-sahara-desert/amp/

I don't find it exciting do you one great tedium? I want to see this HP head somewhere.. plenty of gefs members have mid Atlantic blocks, so slight hope going forward into January.

A massive three posts on the 0z runs on the shortest day of the year. Surely a Netweather minimum record?

The 0z runs are generally blocked, but the eye candy in gfs lala land has vanished this morning.Best to say after a unsettled blip it will get calmer and colder again as the anticyclone takes over, after that who knows although another sinker looks a decent shout..

Never mind the official records, or the parcelling up the year into neat 3 month chunks, today is the first day of winter in my world. I look forward to a front loaded cold one; it can start anytime it likes in the next week or two....

Logically it should be the middle of winter now given that it's the peak of the astronomical conditions that cause winter to be winter. Using astronomical to start the season makes no sense, even with seasonal lag it doesn't match up. In 5 weeks spring flowers will begin, and in a couple of weeks some birds start nesting!

Winter to me is November 24-Feb 23. The sun is too strong by this stage to prevent widespread snowcover. Just imo though and there will always be rare exception ex-Feb 1895, 1947, 86 etc but the strength of sun makes it for me.
