The worrying thing is I think the USA will take a long time to get this under control because of how laxed they are and with travel continue to spread it around the globe. 2 months down the line every country in the world bans us citizens from entering. Now wouldn't that be ironic. And Mexico closes the border haha

Mexico closing the border would be the ultimate jaffa cakes take

Slovenia has closed its border with Italy now and Norway has announced it has 304 cases with 8 contracting the virus from unknown origins.

Personally, I'm thanking our lucky stars that we haven't had a major natural disaster during all this.  Can barely imagine the chaos if a major earthquake occurred in a highly populated area of a country with a high infection rate ><  Evacuation centers/camps would become insane spreading grounds, along with the possible collapse of the local health centers/hospitals etc, it would truly be an unmitigated disaster like something from a disaster movie/novel.

Should have done it a while back, or Italy should have been pro-active and done it for them.

Grim. Very grim. Is Italy same as the likes of Spain re funerals? You know, 2 days after death is normally the funeral? I expect family and friends will be banned as well. Sad times.

Cases was 9172 and 463. So a reduction in cases compared to few days but an uptick in deaths.

Deaths are a backward looking measure, there will be a lag relative to new cases, neither of which make for reassuring reading in regards to a CFR.

However, flip side is the sheer number of cases in the RoW linked to Italy suggests their case numbers might be way off.

Unfortunately yes..

Government Agency will be doing a daily update at 6pm (GMT) that should update all of the inflected areas

So could be that some reports are incomplete

That's roughly 7 deaths an hour, or roughly 1 death just under every 9 mins in the last 24 hours with the current figures.

Rate of increase is starting to slow at least, but that mortality rate is ridiculous. Worse than overwhelmed Wuhan, worse than third world sanction-hit Iran, nine times deadlier than South Korea. Something is going very wrong I hope it's just thousands of mild cases being missed.

I suspect the Italians had absolutely no choice but to take this action.

Once you start seeing clusters there is only one way its going.

I wish we’d get clear figures on community transmission v direct links .

Thats the key ratio . Direct links aren’t the biggest concern for governments, the community transmission is what causes the big increase in cases and that’s what happened in northern Italy .

Amazing?

Plenty of foreign students here in Exeter but no cases, yet Devon is one of the leading counties for cases - cos? UK holiday makers coming back from ski trips over half term?  Make of that what you will.

I think the Turkey/Greece/Syria situation fits your description bar the "natural" bit.

What about if it spreads to Kenya and Ethiopia, the death toll will end up making the holocaust look tame.

Is that over the longer term in several waves . Surely she can’t mean from the current spread .
