The 2013/2014 winter was by far the poorest one i can ever remember.

Only had a couple of coverings of snow which didn't even survive the day which is unheard of for my location and height.

This winter is like Narnia in comparison.⛄

I'm just at the other side of Burnopfield in Whickham and, other than 1 day where it melted at night, we have had very little worthwhile (sledging or snowman worthy) lying snow. We normally do fairly well being over 500ft but not this year sadly. That extra elevation has helped you and Stanley / Consett scrape a bit more.

The winter so far in the Lake District at least has shared many similarities with winter 08-09. An episodic winter with cold and mild alternating, the colder periods lasting upwards of 2 weeks but brought only slight coverings of snow away from highest ground. Early Feb delivered 2 inches only. Indeed the current spell is reminding me alot of early-mid Feb 2009.

I hope we don't switch mid-month as we did in Feb 09, to very mild and wet..

Another Feb that brought a similar switcharound mid month was 2012, almost cousins, second half very mild again... leading into the abnormal mild March.

Too early to call how second half month may pan out, I'm not expecting much Atlantic influence, question is where will the block position itself? Directly overhead? To our east or NE? To our north or north west? To our south or se?

I know its far away and no one really knows but i will ask the question anyway, our best chance for some is if that front coming in from the west on Saturday. If this makes it over the pennines then the cold air in place here would see heavy snow.

One to watch i guess. ?

Back to the here and now, showers incoming.

We never do well when showers have to pass over the Pennines they always get eaten up by the mountains.

We go live to the North Easterners working out how they might get some snow...

We have snow. Blimey, imagine what we would have had with this kind of snow for hours. And before anyone says it, I am NOT popping into the Scotland thread to find out...

High clouds gone, wind's due to turn NE, come on guys this must be our night!

What we're watching for is the streamer currently affecting the Edinburgh area to slowly rotate and head our way.

The Boro to Newcastle gap is really clear there. Seems to be opening up... how will it fill? (Genuine question.)

Why do people keep mentioning streamers when we've had nothing close to one. I think it's time people woke up a little in here. People are circling small showers on the radar then are getting disappointed.

I'm not saying there isn't potential, but some common sense would help.

When the winds veer more NE but it's anyone's guess as to who gets what right now.

Best bit of Snow I’ve seen since the start of the easterly.  If only every shower was like this.  Not graupel. Thick heavy snow

Nick it’s the same here virtually nothing coming our way foe the next 3 hours unless the wind changes, such a pity when we have such perfect Synoptics, bear up we might still get lucky.
