Heavy rain showers on and off all morning in Portishead.

There's a joggers' / dog walkers' path just in front of my house. On days like this, I see so many people getting soaked to the skin because they ventured out when it was sunny and didn't consider that it might rain. Even saw/heard a couple arguing over it yesterday as their toddler got soaked.

"Sometimes weird stuff happens around here ... there was a waterspout last August, and a mini-twister this April (though could have been a dust devil). Could be some orographic effect related to the narrowing of the channel or the Black Mountains? Dunno."

yep, orographics and temp differentials over the Bristol Channel. A proper micro-climate worthy of detailed study.

Yes, I hadn't considered the temp differential of sea vs land on both sides on hot days, plus presumably any 'Channel Sink' pressure differential also.

As you say, it could be worth a study. I know that the UK supposedly gets more tornadic events per square mile than most other places in the world, but I would still say that it's above average that Bristol and the Severn Estuary gets something of that ilk once every two or three years.

Well I am personally happy for a return of the atlantic. Yes its colder and feels it. But I have seen more sun in the last 24 hours than I have for weeks lol. Yea still cloudy but I am seeing sun for more than 10 seconds at a time ...!

The Frome storm drought continues, however, there’s been some nice clouds of late and a nice TL opportunity before the arrival of a shower.

Does look like heat could build later in July with increased real electric storm risk too…

Haha yes. I think the shortest dog walk my neighbour did once was to the end of the road, at which point the heavens opened, and he marched straight back

Very much a ‘shower on shower off’ type day today. When the sun does pero through it feels quite steamy, despite only being 19C.

Was nice to see some amazing clouds/ scenery. What was so strange was on the radar the intensity was immense indicative of thunderstorms .( very dark reds ) but no thunder or lightning.
yet I’d seen darkish reds last couple days southwest toward Taunton etc and lots lightning storms there.
Here’s a screenshot of this evenings intense streamer yet no strikes storms From it but radar intensity was immense.  Can anyone explain to a numpty please.

Here’s a couple shots from this evenings cloud action.
