Lets hope none of the fires are too serious. Weird here now, spells of calm followed by spells of hairdryer gusty winds..feels like a day when anything could happen...

Very clear skies here looking south over the Weald towards Charlwood and beyond.

Should continue to bake into the afternoon.

Race is on to 40 and beyond.

Think we got fractionally ahead of ourselves here with morning sun near the thermometer. Have stalled out at exactly 37 for the past hour. Hope to move forward a little more through early pm.

Always the way though - you get huge increases before lunchtime, and then inch higher beyond that. might take 4 hours to gain 1-2c now.

Alarming how quick they can start up and spread in these conditions. Hope there’s no tragic consequences arise.

Heathrow, Cambridge both stalled at 38 in last half hour

as we saw yesterday, the increases the higher you go become tougher to achieve ….

We've stalled here as well in the 36s.

Probably going to need to look at the likes of Wittering northwards for that 40c

Edit - 39.7c at Heathrow, so maybe London will do it afterall!

Just hit 35.1 °C here in Bewdley. The first 35 I have ever recorded. Still bright sunshine with largely blue skies, though there's a slightly more noticeable breeze now and a fair amount of high cloud out to the SW, first signs of the change to come.

Those in the southwest: is it feeling considerably cooler behind that front yet?

Just been watching Sky News whilst having my lunch.

One of their live feeds on the main screen is of the sun.

Very important to ensure it is still there of course if we are to break records.

It’s feeling cooler ahead of the front! Most odd...

Yeah some of the more progressive models were much more aligned NW-SE vs current imagery.

Will probably mean the likes of GFS were indeed right to pull the very highest temps down to the south coast vs the likes of AROME which had a clear curve and much cooler further south vs further north.

Arome only predicted 33c for me. Ended up probably peaking at 36.7c, so quite a large bust for them locally and I expect that will be replicated elsewhere to the W/SW of London in particular.

It was, temperature dropped to 22c from 25c but it’s climbing again. Expecting 27 or 28c as a finish

That's mad! Creeping closer to 39c here but as expected the rate has slowed dramatically.
