Personally, I didn't enjoy this summer unlike with 1995 and 2018.

Thunder wise, it was a total dud.

Large scale patterns are apparently very similar to 1975, which also saw a hot summer.  Who knows what will happen next summer, will we see another (perhaps even hotter) 1976 or will it all go down the drain?

I’ll give summer 2022 a 9/10. Was in the UK a lot for work and courses, it was a bit too hot on occasion for me but the all-important hours of sunshine were high across all 3 months. Less vile Atlantic grot than usual. One mark knocked off for the lack of thunderstorms in the UK. The Czech summer was also excellent, not quite as hot as SE England but some decent thunderstorms and a couple of heavy frontal rainfall events mean everything is still lush and green.

It was amazing! A slow start but it redeemed itself once started. The heat over 32 really got to me. Esp having to do school run in it up a hill in 35/36c. That almost killed me. But to break a record was both amazing and scary all rolled into one! A big kick up the weeble for mankind. The hose pipe ban was a pain as we couldn't use the paddling pool in the second block of 35c heat we had. But to be expected 🙂 Just amazing! We wont see that next year chaps! I loved it!

It was good to see 40C finally breached in the UK as been awaiting that for a good few years; but sadly it will only get hotter and goes downhill from here but at least i was able to enjoy the warmth and swim freely day or night.  I very much enjoyed this past summer so thank you for the bounty.  Now we wait for Winter.  Winter is coming and it is coming for us all 😆

I’m surprised you say that. I remember you were both moaning a lot in June.

As for my opinion in this summer, it was generally pleasant most of the time. Obviously hasn’t been as hot and dry as down south. Not too much rain. Would have liked it a bit cooler. It got too hot at times, especially those two extremely hot days in July. It was also quite dull at times too, especially during the last week of July, when I didn’t see the sun for a whole week!

Overall, I’d say:

Temperature - bit too warm

Rain - Good

Sunshine - A bit lacking.

Not a bad summer though and certainly better than a lot of recent summers here.

That's why I said a slow start. But seriously compare it to what we usually get - last year for example - hell we had weeks of 25c+ - we broke our record of 36c - the country bust 40c - how could it not end up a classic?!

Well, Beka, we certainly broke records over here: 38C was like heaps above any previous temps. You cannae argue with that!

2022 was a real man summer.

2021 was a summer that should hang it’s head in shame. Go and join the losers table with 1986 and 2012.

As in a summer through which only real men survive? What an utter pile of crap! Time to call on Napolean Solo and Illya Kuryakin methinks?👍

Yes, I have read that you guys down south had it pretty bad with last year's summer. In my neck of the woods, it was a fairly benign summer and rather dry but often cloudy. August in particular was disappointing in regards to sunshine. But the temps themselves were pleasant enough.

It was interesting from a statistical point of view with that bizarre though shortlived heatwave in July. Lacking on the convection side though early September made up for it a bit.

Toughest for working in for at least 2 decades. Far to dry, temps way way above the comfort level.  Found it the worst summer since 2003 overall.

Worse than 2018? Summer 2018 was hotter, in June and July anyway. August 2018 was cooler though.

With record-breaking temperatures, there were around 3,000 more deaths than usual in England and Wales.

A lot of lives were lost this Summer, one of the worst for decades.

Way too hot at times, I think the August one was much worse as it dragged on longer than the record breaking July days. I got to enjoy one day of the August one at a Festival which was an experience! I am not a big heat lover but I can appreciate it being a decent summer and it was inter spread with cooler/cloudy periods in between extreme heat periods for relief.

A lot more lives will be lost this coming winter, with the energy crisis. Whether it was the “worst summer“ is completely subjective as a lot of people enjoyed it. Summer 2018 was hotter anyway.

Summer 2022 feels like a distant memory now and will certainly go down as being a memorable one.

I have enjoyed it for the most part and am happy that we've had a warm and sunny August for once, but I am now equally enjoying the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. Really looking forward to having some more autumnal storms as well as chilly blue sky frosty mornings.

Sorry you've lost me, i'm referring to summer deaths. This Winter could cause as many if bad, i don't understand your point at all. All extreme weather is deadly. It was the worst summer for excess deaths due to heat since 2004, that is not subjective, its fact.

If the coming winter happens to be severe then yes.  However, I think that's unlikely, although no one knows what next season will bring!

There was talk in a BBC news article of these deaths being displaced deaths, with death rates falling below average immediately after the hot spells. The suggestion was that death rate weren't impacted on a longer timeframe, with particularly vulnerable people's deaths brought forward by a very small amount, maybe just weeks.

I believe even a bog standard winter contains far more deaths due to the cold than this summer produces by a considerable margin. I believe the figures are something like 35,000 cold related deaths, vs the just under 3,000 from this summer.

A cold winter in a time of economic hardship will probably multiple that figure.

I wonder what the cold related deaths were like during the 1960's winters and before when cold winters were more common and many did not have central heating?  Plus of course, cities had the issues of smog!
