Tourists returning to the UK from Rhodes describe people being covered in ash and still smelling of smoke.

Looking grim in parts of the med at peak summer. The heat is certainly causing the issue.

This July has been wetter and duller than the modern benchmark bogeyman month, July 2012. Admittedly it has been warmer but still comfortably a degree below average, possibly more so by the end of the month. The one single good day this month was the 7th, apart from that it has been constantly cloudy, muggy and drizzling every 10 minutes.

I don't like to moan like this but it's hard to believe how far this summer has veered off the tracks. Hopefully there's a turnaround in the early days of August.

I feel for you. We had that pretty much all day yesterday. Today it’s been pretty decent.

My parents returned from Rhodes a week ago after having their holiday moved forward a week for work reasons, talk about luck!

Not for a while here. It’s the complete lack of warmth and any dry spells that are killing it here

A day with lots of sunny spells which both the BBC and Met Office said would be overcast. Love it when they get a cloudy forecast wrong ✌️🌞

Same here. Today has been dry, fairly warm and with a nice ending to the day.

I’m flying out to Rhodes on the 6th August….nervously watching the terrible scenes unfolding. Thoughts with everyone affected.

It's sounding like more and more runs are picking up on +30° going into August, some even suggesting a real scorcher! Someone mentioned elsewhere that the teleconnections are starting to pick up pace so who knows, maybe the weather will do a 180° back to warm and dry? July certainly caught us off guard.

Sorry bud ,  just to substantiate the "disagreement" on your post.
A difficult subject and very sad to hear reports of the devastating consequences of both wildfires and severe flooding close to home and around the world.
Whist the prolonged heat and tinder dry landscapes will significantly increase the risk of wildfires,  they in themselves are not the issue.   85% of all global wildfires are human induced, only 15% are down to natural causes, typically "hot lightning".

Mid 20s is usually my upper limit, but high 20s with a breeze can feel okay to me as well.

We will have to disagree then, without those extreme conditions the situation in Rhodes would not be as serious as it is. Of course they are the issue.
