Have just notices the lidar is on at Kuehlungsborn again, 3 nights on the trot now

The laser seams to be attracting  aerosols to the beam ( another ingredient 😅 )

Just checked on the state of the Sun at spacewearher.com, and found an interesting article called

THE THERMOSPHERE IS HEATING UP:

May I suggest that this will be a reason for the slow start to this season😕

Stefan on the German NLC forum seems to agree these are the actual first NLCs of the season.

The translated text reads:

"Noctilucent clouds taken 5 minutes ago near Kaluga!

Height 15° strictly above the northern part of the horizon, field size 40° (in azimuth).

Author: Anastasia Bilan

22:55 June 3, 2023"

Almost definitely NLC which is great to see, especially after seeing so many overoptimistic post on social media.

Encouraging signs, with clear skies likely in the coming days, hopefully the UK will get it's first display of the season.

I should think more of Europe will be seeing them tonight and over the next few days.

click the "context" button, theres another shot of them from tartarstan...

kaluga is 36 degrees east , tartarstan is 50.... sadly that means, according to my calculations, that those nlcs will be north of the uk between about 2pm and 6 pm.... today.

Forget Flensberg.... if thats 9.4 degrees East, which it is, and 3 degrees = 1 hour, then by the time Flensbergs display has got here, itll be light! lol

Brilliant NLCs - good that it was the weekend as I'd be finished during the week at that hour 😂

The NLC`s that appeared over Flensburg (at midnight) looked very similar in structure and altitude to the ones that were viewed over UK skies, by many members

Edit; excuse the thumbnail .. larger in Archive

Suppose it depends just how extensive that NLC band is.

The band last night stretched from the Urals (59E) to Bryansk (34E) apparently.

I'm trying to figure out the relation of temperature shown on the charts here to the formation of NLCs

http://meteoweb.ru/astro/nc.php

There's some info here

I can understand that you may feel it coincidental that the NLC` shown over Flensburg turned up later that morning, despite the similarity's to the display (including rare vertical veils.)

What i don't understand is your belief that they couldn`t of made the transit

The 5 day transit of NLC`s around the Artic is not a scientific constant its an approximate from NASA

We have seen that in the past while trying to make forecasts using the AIM daisies,
sometimes it worked, other time`s it didn`t.

I`m not sure that it can be taken down to transit per hour, with any confidence of a high level of accuracy.

well youre the one that pioneered the clock face and 5 day transit, transferring that to degrees is a practical way foreward. i have no idea whether it works or how accurate it is... what we are trying to do here is discover a most reliable way to try to predict them. it could save going out.. some of us cannot see the northern horizon from our homes and need to travel. plus im trying to promote awareness and interest in nlcs on taw.. so i need to be able ... if possible ... to be able to predict them so we can tell people they are likely.

my earlier post regarding flensburg was tongue in cheek, hence the "lol"...

on the daisys we could see just how large the area of nlcs was... sometimes they are small, in which case viewing webcams wont be accurate and i remember last season, someone, and i think it was you, forgive me if not..posted "flensburgs on fire" ... but here we got nothing, nada, zilch, zero... so in that case the areas was small. other times flensburg has had a display that we have seen... a large area ..

all im trying to do is examine the possibilies of prediction... as things stand, there are no conclusions! ill test out theories until we can find one that works or discover we cannot predict.
