WillinGlossop just been out to the local shop and there was some sleet with the rain as i could see the icy bits on the windscreen.

Joe,  my youngest,  has gone on a train photography expedition. His plan was to catch the first train from Hadfield down to Manchester Piccadilly, get the tram to Victoria and a train to Leeds.

From his texts, it appears that his Leeds train was cancelled with the next one running late.

I did warn him that after yesterday's industrial action, the train stock and personnel could be in the wrong places and lead to shenanigans today.

A cold raw afternoon here, raining, current temp 5 degrees.

Ive seen pictures of snow at Patterdale valley level 150m. The lack of sun is retaining the snow at all levels, making for a very wintry day out on the fells. I imagine it will have caught many out.

Further snow to modest levels rest of the day. Tomorrow may dawn icy with light frost.

Wondering if the Scandi high will be revving up by midweek? Two close relatives have birthdays mid March.   Often celebrate with some sort of snowfall -- we call it their "little winter".

A Face like Thunder Nice to see some surprise brightness like yesterday but have had a heavy hail shower rattle through here in the past half hour or so. First hail in a while here.

Chris.R doesn’t surprise me. We had torrential sleety rain as it passed through here.

There's a beefy looking band of showers pushing down the Cheshire Gap to my west Northwich down to Tarporley direction currently, might see some more hail.

Looking S & E there appears to be some snow on Kinder and Bleaklow, whether that's from yesterday or this morning I don't know. Nothing on wildbank hill which is lower down at 399m. Yesterday there was a bit you could see near the summit.

A few sleety hailstones in the heavier precipitation, temps between 4 and 5 degrees. Definately a firm gloomy winter feel to things today. A quick descent into dusk I feel. All rather grim on the back of an equally cold wintry Friday. We need a 'spring' boost after 4 months of wet gloom. Ground is absolutely sodden, the phrase ' the darkest hour before dawn' springs to mind.. one last push through March...

Looks like that cell has electrified to my east. Was listening to football though so I didn't hear anything. Going outside in case it does another.

Some wording in the mad thread from the usual suspects about potential moving forward regarding cold, they've been saying it for months. But wouldn't it be just typical that as we get to mid March we get a 2018 mini beast scenario. Where was you all winter? I'd take it for sure but I'd love a mid winter one better.

Dark Horse Whatever 'potential moving forward' is supposed to mean.

PS: I've been on here for more than twenty years -- they've been right too, a couple of times!😁

  • April 2024 - Was it that cold overall? A look at the statistics

General perception from many is that April was a cold month, but statistics would suggest otherwise, with the average temperature for the whole month coming in just above the 30 year average for the UK as a whole. A warm first half to to the month averaged out the cold second half. View the full blog here
