A blustery start to the day here, some hefty showers rattling against the window earlier, currently 5.3C.

All the showers are coming through here with hail in them. Fast-moving though, only last a minute or so.

Fast moving blustery rain/sleet showers through the Cheshire Gap on a cool NW wind.

Sunshine and showers sort of day coming up for most with a postcode lottery of who sees the lions share of the dry, usable weather and who get soaked.

It’s sunny here at the moment but in the last half hour we have had a bit of everything including heavy hail and I think that this will be the case throughout the day.

hopefully a bit better tomorrow but next week and the Easter weekend onwards are looking, to put it politely, depressingly mixed.

cheshire snow Yes, a regular feed of blustery showers. This would potentially have been a nice setup a month or two ago. It's just going to make for a bit of a rotten day today.

Morning.  Currently 5°C  (8.05am).  Had the spooky jaundiced glow everywhere early this am.  Some breaks in the cloud briefly revealing the odd TCU's.  Some brightness for now, got caught in hail feeding the birds earlier.

Surprisingly still dry and quite bright here and not as chilly in the brisk wind as I was expecting.

Sat 23rd March 2013 was spent in Chester and the snow lay thick on the ground, although surprisingly there was none back in Crewe. In the N Wales hills, there was a disastrous loss of sheep and lambs to the cold and snow. It was also the last full weekend before Easter. A sign of things to come perhaps? I hope not!

 Scuba steve

We take it for granted that our roads and railways a capable of supporting the vehicles that run above.

Todays weather isnt going to help the situation.

Had Worse We worry up here about collapsed and silted drains under farmland, now much worse due to the increasing rain ---  there's no end to the expensive maintenance.   It's an endless challenge like painting the Forth Bridge.

But what a responsibilty maintaining thousands of miles of railway track in good order to keep the public safe.

There's now all sorts of monitoring kit to find potential voids under rail track.  Try Googling-- void detection railways.

However  if no-one properly understands the amont of rain that has fallen and the drainage routes and is prepared to do some investigation with a spade -- then dangerous problems will reoccur.  Sometimes new building developments add to surface outflow and increase uncetainty for places lower down.    Yet more to detect.

Anyway - Today is a drying day.  Cold wind, but doing some good and reducing surface slutch.   Some sun and only the odd very brief shower.   Curent temp 6,1C

At least it's not continuous rain, some decent sunny breaks between the showers. Now got hail lashing against the window.

Plenty of sunshine today but no shortage of heavy hail and sleety showers either but no white, even  on the highest tops I can see from here.

all in all, could have been better but could easily have been worse as well.

Why couldn’t the pretty constant showers crossing here since early afternoon have been snow then at least they would have stopped either north or south and given me a dry usable few hours🤬

Have managed to dodge the worst of any showers here in SE Cheshire - many often light and quickly passing even some brightness this morning but brrr that wind is cold today feel like we’ve been dragged back into late winter again 🥶

Chucking down here just now, chased me inside from bricklaying a support for my new IBC waterbutt.

As expected a day of dodging the showers, many of them, but thankfully not too long lasting or heavy. Most notable feature the cold wind, meaning winter woolies at the ready again.

Tomorrow promises to be a largely fine sunny day until later on, none too warm, but the wind will be lighter and it should feel quite pleasant in the sun.

Surprisingly good start to the day. Blue skies and a few scattered clouds.Wind has eased off and in the more sheltered spots the warmth of the sun is really pleasant. Seemed to have had quite a few Springs recently that have been dominated by Greenland highs or other HLB that suddenly flip into summer. Perhaps this will be another.

  • April 2024 - Was it that cold overall? A look at the statistics

General perception from many is that April was a cold month, but statistics would suggest otherwise, with the average temperature for the whole month coming in just above the 30 year average for the UK as a whole. A warm first half to to the month averaged out the cold second half. View the full blog here
