  1. I can definitely vouch for the storms that tracked in our area to be severe! Certainly from an electrical perspective. (Friday night) and rain intensity (Yesterday afternoon) - One was on a par with something we saw in Illinois this year, for sure. They were quite localised though, certainly my Sister in Law had far less activity yesterday, but more on Friday night, and she's only 16 miles west from us.
  2. Well, we had an absolute little corker here this afternoon, rumbles started about 2.30pm, and kept watching the radar, a little sceptical of anything actually happening, but then convinced Rick that if we just went up the road to have a look....... So Glad we did! Drove to Fobbing park and set up the camera and go pro to film the storm just building over the estuary towards Southend. Had a good 30 min of just watching huge CGs before the rain hit, but also got some interesting cloud and structure stuff which looks awesome on time-lapse. Then headed a bit further back west to try and avoid the rain and parked up at One tree hill and saw more very close CGs with real shotgun thunder, but absolutely rain-wrapped and a little too close for comfort for my liking to be standing out in it, so we then repositioned again to Coalhouse fort, which is right on the River, but a bit further west, but by the time the rain had eased enough to walk a bit further out to get a better view, it had gone over towards London and the Thames had started to become quite misty. Got back home about 6.30 to no power and no phone line, and three very jumpy cats. Power came back on about 7.30 but the resulting surge has literally fried my Fridge and the compressor is going loopy trying to restart itself, the socket is behind said Fridge and it's a massive stainless larder affair (Seemed like a good idea at the time) so now I need to cut the power to the ground floor of the house for about an hour to hope it restarts.... Got some amazing footage (which I can't tinker with as Mac is on the ground floor) but will definitely post it up once I've edited out all the swearing! Two mini local chases this weekend, I'm very happy!
  3. Sorry, not sure where you're going with this! I'm sure the chief forecaster at the met would appreciate your feedback.
  4. tbh, I've seen far more favourable conditions for Severe weather in the US forecast, and it's still not delivered the goods. Models are interpretations of statistical algorithms, and open t human interpretation - and there's always a lot of chance involved with a Plume event, especially on a tiny island surrounded by water! I don't think anyone could correctly predict 100% the track of any of the activity, esp when we've had both homegrown and imports on the table.
  5. OH's Grandparents reporting lighting out to sea from Clacton.... Just a tiny shunt west please, go on....!
  6. Trying to decide where to position to get the best view of the *potential* import, I think I might take a leaf out of Mr Sherman's book and head East towards southend.....
  7. Looking across the channel, it seems That Rouen has a storm to each side, plus quite a lot to come up from the south. I'm pretty optimistic that we'll see something from one of them, activity to the left (the one you can see on NW radar) does seem to have reduced a little, but if you look at it on Blitztortung, then it's popping away like mad on both sides, so I'm not putting the camera away yet!
  8. Pretty early in the day to call a bust (Certainly on this side of the country) considering it took until mid evening last night for good activity to reach us..!
  9. Looking West from here, just seeing some bubbly looking tops pop up, quite a way out, but they're there nonetheless - Sun keeps trying to break through the Haze, temp sitting at 28.6c, 77f DP... (According to station) - certainly uncomfortable at the moment.....
  10. If you don't have a tripod, you need to position your camera on something so it's still really - wall, pile of books, car roof fence post etc...... I took mine with 6 second shutter, FStop (Aperture) at F11 and ISO at 100. I also set my Whitebalance to Auto, which stops everything coming out a bit orange. Zoom your lens out, make sure you're on manual focus and keep pressing the button until you get a good-un! (This is for night lightning, I am totally useless with daytime lightning!)
  11. Posted this on the severe thread, but here's one of mine from last night...
  12. Yeah, wouldn't have said that MCS died until at least an hour ago, it was pretty vivid here! Also, looking at what's developing now to the south/south west, it's pretty similar in direction to how last night's bonus storms happened..... just being a little hopeful & not putting the camera away just yet.....
  13. wow, wow, wow... cannot believe how fast this is moving!!! Camera and go pro charging frenzy!
  14. difficult to call because the storms we're expecting haven't initiated yet, I think watching movement and development on radar between say 7pm and 10pm should give a good indication, that's how I guesstimated the track of last night's Storm... (And even then I wasn't 100% until it actually went off!)
  15. In addition, there is a thread dedicated to the No-Storms-Club. Membership is free...so if you're feeling full of non convective woe, then it might be a good place to vent... http://forum.netweather.tv/topic/80888-the-no-storms-club-july-2014-0nwards/
  16. Ha! My technical descriptions are appalling, I am better drawing them with sharpies, and using daft analogies. (as Tour one discovered this year)
  17. Bit sticky out there! Dewpoint 24c! Temp sitting at 29c....... oooh, it's exciting! Aside the horrendous Tube journey tonight, I'm excited! I am equipping the flat roof with all camera items and things.
  18. Far far better explanation of CAPE here compared to my shambolic description.... Thanks Nick http://forum.netweather.tv/topic/80249-what-is-capeli/
  19. Yep, there's hazy, but potent sunshine here in C London - My home wx station is already reading 29c.... the question About Cape - it's one (Although an important one) ingredient in the mixing bowl, high Cape = High instability = lots of lovely lift which is needed to create nice tall clouds, and subsequently thunderstorms. High Cape is good for lightning too, and big hail... I am 120% sure that Nick or AJ could explain it better......
  20. What a corker!, with proper US style gunshot thunder, one strike was so close, beautiful fork, all the hairs on my arms stood up, just awesome!
  21. Ah, living vicariously through the SW radar at the moment, 22c here at the moment, interestingly the breeze has really picked up the last 30 min or so.. Channel looks pretty lively, wonder if we'll grab a cheeky lightshow a bit later...
