The first of those showers coming up from the SW has just got here (about 8 miles south of Reading). Steady heavy...ish rain. But nothing even vaguely thundery about it ...sorry -

Been tipping down here. Looking at the channel/France on the radar we could have an interesting afternoon! This evening I'm meant to be helping to set up tents/gazebos for Saturdays school fete ......although I can see that being canned at this rate! -
Apparently fairly widely felt in Wellington etc . Night time in NZ....but no reports of significant damage

No rumbles of thunder yet ....but already had a couple of very potent squally showers -
Pouring with rain here still....it eased off a bit for a few hours early this evening but hasn't stopped all day. The roads around here were suffering badly this afternoon and tonights rain isn't going to make travel easy tomorrow morning. This is the A33, between Basingstoke and Reading.
-
Yes ...I'm about 10miles north of that area and I've had a very very wet drive this morning M3/A33....lots and lots of water on the roads, large puddles with blocked drains (leaves from the gales of a few days ago?). Rivers and streams around here coping at the moment....but I expect them to rise a lot more, especially if we're treated to storms this afternoon..after this lot has cleared through.

I've just got back from a munro-bagging trip (five sisters of kintail and s Glenshiel ridge).....my crampons and iceaxe saw action for all of about 20mins!! Plenty of wind and rain in NW highlands but a distinct lack of snow aside from the highest peaks.

3cm or so covering overnight. Some should hang around today which will help temps to drop away quickly tonight. -8c might be realistic for tomorrow morning in this area. Anyway, my boys were pleased with the wintery outlook on the school run;- 350 replies

temp 0.6c DP -2.1c Very light snow here between Reading and Basingstoke. Light covering on everything and some heavier stuff on the radar to the west. Off out soon to a concert in Basingstoke. Could be an interesting drive back @ 10pm on the country lanes around here. -

-6.1C here this morning. Looking ahead I'm seeing a slight shift east in the models this morning ...with a resulting eastwards shift in the boundary between rain and snow. I agree with Snow drift and Lynnism....certainly need to be east of Southampton and away from the immediate coastal fringe. If you're further north and have a bit of elevation that will also help. It is all on a knife edge though and still more than 24hrs away ....plenty of time for the tiny changes that those in the west of our area will need for snow. -

Pompey does have the distinct disadvantage of being low lying, next to the sea, and sheltered by Portsdown Hill to the north. But....big snow events can happen...for those that know Pompey back in the very late 70s I was at what was then Great Salterns school ...(now Portsmouth College?)...and I remember walking to school along Tangier Road ...on top of a 5ft hedge which was buried under a snowdrift!! If that unlikely scenario doesn't come off this weekend ...you could probably rely on Butser Hill. Meanwhile here in North Hampshire, looking at the last few model runs we look to be ideally placed for some significant snow on Saturday evening/Sunday morning. But I'm keeping everything crossed given how marginal the setup is...50km either way could make all the difference and we've still got more than 48hrs for things to change. -

I always wonder how useful a Thames streamer can be to those on the periphery of the Thames valley? From an imby perspective can it deliver for those in north hampshire? FI, but this channel low would be nice -

Cold coming .....but not so sure about snow prospects. If we get a decent easterly flow perhaps some decent snow showers for those in favoured areas. Perhaps the IOW could get hammered if the flow were to turn more to the east-south-east. -

Morning .........anyone? So how far east will the precipitation get on Sunday evening?......and what will it be, rain, snow or sleet. Looking at the latest models I reckon the Salisbury plain area could see snow as well as parts of western hampshire, say as far as the A34....but doubt it'll get further east. And some further west and on the coasts will get to enjoy the sleet and rain. Hope I'm wrong. -

I know things are looking on the mild side, but heading for the beaches already? -
The last problems were during the snow (non) event on 16 December. Seems that these problems have not been resolved. There might be a solid uptime record, but just not during significant weather events.

Very very blowy this morning. Kids had great fun trying to fly outside their school on the first day back with the wind howling off the fields. Wife not impressed ...with all trains through Bramley cancelled due to a fallen tree on the line at Mortimer. The squall line looks to be building as it moves southeast ....and promises to be interesting when it hits. -
Not a great start to 2012 in NZ. Earthquakes down south and flooding up north. I'm half expecting volcanic eruptions for my trip home in March!

Fortunately nobody killed.......but these repetitive quakes are really hitting morale down in Christchurch. There are estimates that 10% of the population are likely to move out of New Zealand's second largest city. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=10775107 http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10775053
