Some forty of the 119 countries that pledged last year to slash emissions of the powerful greenhouse gas methane will unveil their plans to do so at the UN climate summit next week, according to a senior U.S. official.

The United States, Canada and Vietnam are among the countries that will put forward details, according to the official in U.S. President Joe Biden's administration, who asked not to be named.

The world’s top two largest methane emitters, China and India, are not signatories to the pledge, and other big emitters like Brazil are not expected to have plans in time for the talks.

  2. So as COP27 is now mere days away, now is the time for a new discussion thread.

A lot has happened since COP26, new agreements, new targets, the promise of updated NDCs didn't happen for the majority of countries that pledged to do so. (Only around two dozen did out of the 200 ish countries)

The war currently ongoing between Russia and Ukraine has lead to countries leaning back to coal, more oil and gas while on the long run may "quicken" the process of going green.

In some glimmer of hopes, The IEA thinks that "Total demand for fossil fuels declines steadily from the mid-2020s" which is hopefully the start of a trend.

Solar/Wind power continues to grow at a moderate pace but no means it is quick enough at the moment.

Sadly, I do fear that progress will be limited while time is needed very precious.

If you are interested in reading a couple of papers which have been released a few days ago I will leave some links before.

    October update

    November to January

The likelihood of a colder three month period overall is slightly greater than normal.

There is a reduced chance of wet conditions and impacts from heavy rainfall.

Chances of dry conditions are greater than normal.

Stormy conditions, and impacts from high winds, are less likely than normal.

must be confident for this 🤞

While I'm not exactly have the best of confidence in long range forecasting and outlooks.

The met office be on something if they are expecting a "sightly greater" chance of colder winter.

    We shall see

  4. I really hope that we do get a cold and snowy winter, it's been quite a few that I have experienced a decent snowfall here in the far south west.

Sadly, thanks to climate change snow is going to become a increasing rarity here, of course they will be extreme events that would produce snowfall.

Hopefully fingers crossed we might get some snowfall no matters the odds.

It is a bit daft. They could bring in overzealous Covid restrictions at the drop of the hat, but stopping someone filling up a swimming pool? Nah, 2 weeks of legal wrangling. Bonkers.

Strange world we live in eh?

Yorkshire Water have this morning announced a hosepipe ban effective from August 26th affecting more than 5 million people

So 14 days from now? Suppose it's needs to go through legal stuff before enforcing it?

Well that will be out the window if it gets decalred that the whole of the UK is in drought sooner rather than later.

    You might be right

A drought could be declared in "quite a few regions" of the country tomorrow, a source from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has told Sky News.

I'm surprised that the whole of England isn't in a drought alert.

Basically we can expect a ban here in Cornwall in the coming days/weeks?

This really does remind me of the weather conditions for wildfires in California...
