Hurricane Ophelia

I've been watching that bunting since the day before yesterday. I'd become emotionally invested in it. It was my equivalent of Hector the Palm Tree. Even in the dark, because of the street lights, you could see the bunting flap around. This morning it began doing loop-de-loops as the sky cleared over it; one minute it was hanging limply, the next it was straight up in the air, then to the left, to the right. I even heard the"SNAP!" Now that's weird... just typed Stereo MC lyrics... and I saw them in Cork supporting U2 on the Zooropa tour. -

It went up around 9 am, bit too late for hubby who was by then firmly ensconced at work which is well outside even the yellow area! -

Lamppost on the Waterford webcam has started to wobble a tiny bit. Sky is fascinating to watch. -

This little gem from the NHC stuck out. Tropical storm force wind field 510 miles in diameter "Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles (95 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 255 miles (405 km)" -

Someone mentioned earlier that the still mushrooming cloud tops near the centre increased the chances of a sting jet. I can't rememeber who it was. Can anyone help here re sting jet possibilities? -

I can't leave mine out. My field is almost standing water and the only shelter is a line of trees that face SW so they'd be pretty exposed. Also very thin soil which is currently saturated and field bounded by major road and railway line. Any tree down on the fence and I could be looking at a major RTA or train derailment. In the past I've had to spend the night on the stables with them to help keep them calm. Problem is my 14.2 bombproof mare died and I have on loan a 16.2 flighty ISH to keep my spooky boy company. The bombproof mare was great at keeping the wee guy calm, he looks for reassurance. I can see a night in the stables is probably on the cards for me. -

As I said earlier in the thread, I'd rather be over-warned than under-warned. I was out at the shopping centre today. Not a single shop assistant knew what was coming our way tomorrow night. Neither did the friends I bumped into. Earlier in this thread someone said"It's only a yellow so nothing to be concerned about" or words to that effect. I'm not dissing on those who don't know about it or those who think a yellow is nothing to be concerned about. I think there's confusion about what is meant by impact. Joe Public think it means the strength of the system and the potential to cause damage and refers to the storm itself, not realising that impact seems to refer to the number of people affected and the monetary damage overall. The wee isolated village in the back of beyond will never qualify for a red if that's the case. Maybe I'm becoming too cynical in my old age. -

I hate to mention this, but upgrading to an amber after dark on a Sunday night with the weather expected to hit tomorrow is gonna be really useless for many people. It's gonna be too late to do very much. -
