  1. Not so Dec 2010 was a classic example as was Feb 47 where a Greenland high will bring very mild south easterly Atlantic winds across eastern Canada..both months were extremely cold across western Europe and extremely mild across eastern Canada..also those charts would if the High pressure is where you show it produce extremely cold conditions across Europe Scandinavia and Russia but they show no such anomaly..so to me its shows a continental high across central Europe forcing warm winds over the top of Scandinavia into northern Russia and the arctic..hence the dark oranges and reds in those areas.
  2. Blocked where exactly?..cant be over Greenland as it is colder then normal over the eastern flank of Canada which would mean low pressure over Greenland pulling North to North west winds across eastern Canada... looks like blocking over Germany pushing warm winds up the north west flank of Norway into the arctic north of Scandinavia?
  3. plus the fact it gives a nice balance to all the cold solutions that are endlessly rolled out
  4. They probably just mean the weather is much more chaotic during the winter months...can cause lots of accidents..there are increased incidents of illness during the winter months..doesn't necessarily have anything to do with prolonged cold or snow
  5. they are the right way up when i post them not sure why the end up being upside down?
  6. hardly a fair battle as the clinate for both places is virtually the same nothing to separate them...i wouldnt like to live in either place
  7. http://weather.gc.ca/saisons/image_e.html?img=s234pfe1t_cal Environment Canada monthly update is out today...looking like a colder and drier scenario for my neck of the woods Dec 13 - Feb 14...Greenland isnt shown but the oranges are heading up there so could be high pressure in that region..well above norm temps at least
  8. Warnings have already been issued here upwards of 20cm of snow forecast sat and sunday
  9. First big winter storm is forecast for the weekend and could dump between 20-25cm of snow by Sunday night...here Autumn is now over..i suspect the snow that falls will now be on the ground until April.
  10. i spent a glorious 2 weeks in Cyprus in the summer 2009...BBQs a plenty for me
  11. CC good thing here and in Edmonton is that if you leave your outside lights off..its a sign you dont do Halloween and nobody knocks on your door phew..when i was in Edmonton and had my kids living with me we dd the whole Halloween thing..and TBH it wasn't too bad

  16. not really the snow line is as much as 200 miles inland with nothing around Hudson Bay itself...so does not look like a lake effect snow event at all...probably a slow moving or dissipating cold front with cold undercutting from the north.
  17. 21c and wall to wall sunshine today..by Sunday it will be below freezing and snowing..welcome to Alberta in October
  18. im going to stick my neck out and say -31c here in Calgary some time in mid December
  19. The jet over the pacific and North America has been locked into this pattern since the beginning of August and does not look like changing in the next 2 weeks at least..maybe its good to get it out of the way now rather than having it locked through the winter.
  20. clocks dont go back here until 1st Sunday in November and then go forward on the 1st Sunday of March..which means im an hour closer to home for about 4-5 weeks of the year
