  1. John much as i would like to ..there is a nice website called weatherspark that will give you dialy monthly and yearly facts about places all over the world...Calgary included
  2. of course i do not shovel snow ever day nor did i say that i do..i pointed out its a downside of having lots of snow
  3. when i had an apartment in west London i never put my heating on once even when it was biter outside..i was on the third floor so benefited from heating of the communal areas and apartments below and next to me...paid for it the summer though was like a heat box
  4. yea you can esp when you got to shovel the stuff off your drive and sidewalk everyday
  5. i go into winter with mixed feelings...good things..no mosquitoes and i dont have to worry about keeping the house cool (as i only have one small air conditioning unit) you can weeks of glorious crisp sunny days..on the down side you can get weeks of cold snowy weather which brings the back breaking chore of snow shoveling...and worst of all is those weeks where it is just very cold overcast and endless nothingness which can be depressing.
  6. Trouble with DC and many US cities east of the Rockies mountains is the high humidity in the summer..without AC living there would be unbearable during the summer months.
  7. talking of coincidences and weather events...my birthday was on the 12th November in 1978,81,85,86,90 and 2009 all were followed by cold and snow...even when we look at the hot summers of 76,83,90,95,03 and 06 again the same date is found..i have checked the calendar and you will be pleased to know my birthday falls on the 12th yet again this year...what with the above and my birthday date i think not only is a cold winter nailed on but the second coming cannot be ruled out!
  8. Famous last words summer has come to an abrupt end...its 4c and raining today
  9. rather cold and blustery with wintry showers esp in the north drier and brighter further south with sunshine and scattered blustery showers
  10. This is where forced air has an advantage over radiators...Canadian houses dont have radiators but air vents like in your car in each room...when you turn the furnace on (no combi boilers) it blows warm air through these vents. You can warm a house to the required temperature very very quickly..often i dont have the heating on during the day even in the depths of winter when its -20c outside esp if i am at work..sometimes i have come home and the temp of the house is only 5 or 6c...turn the heating on and it will take less than an hour to warm the whole house up to 21c.
  11. Now officially the hottest first two weeks of September on record here
  12. Thats one of those faux Greenland high..the real high pressure is somewhat further south west over Newfoundland and Labrador
  13. Forget the UK 80s think more Dynasty meets Biily Ray Cyrus..big hair and mullets...denim on denim and worse sin of all in the summer...tshirt tucked into shorts (belt is optional) with white socks pulled up half way to the knee with sandals
  14. you were right the first time...Canada is permanently stuck in the 1980s
  15. nope still in the 80s here...so still got the air con going.
  16. did they predict a mild winter for 2009/10?...the BBQ summer quote comes from 2009 not 2010+...as far as im aware they no longer do seasonal forecasts?
  17. Probably reverting to more seasonal temperatures across the northeast...where as the rest of N.America summer continues with temps staying well into 30s..even here we could hit 30c again over the weekend like we did yesterday and another couple of times is possible by the time we get into next week. Average high at this time of year are around 16/17c..with average lows around 2/3c...first air frost occurs around the 10th September but we haven't really got below 10c..no frost is forecast in the next 10 days either.
  18. Having experienced both weather types endless mild and endless cold and snow i can confirm both are equally dull and irritating...i think what most people enjoy is the anticipation of a weather event..so im guessing most people here would really rather enjoy a flip flop winter of 2 weeks of cold and snow followed by 2 weeks of mild followed by 2 weeks of cold and snow then rinse and repeat?..maybe a bit like the winter of 78-79
  19. Mild and breezy please...constant sub zero temps get boring after a few weeks.
  20. Following on from this theme...August 1914...November 1918...September 1939.....May 1945
  21. not really..warmest day so far this year was July 2nd..and the warmest day last year was also in July.
  22. What i find interesting is that it seems that sunspot activity has no effect on the North American winter climate at all..it seems to have a purely European influence.
