  1. tough one even though i lived through the Brutal winter of 2010-11 in Edmonton Alberta...its close call between Dec 1978 and February 1978
  2. Because of my geographical position with regard to time zones..mornings have a bias towards late sunrises and evening to late sunsets..at the moment the sun rise at 06.20 but sets at 21.06..so have dark mornings and light evenings.
  3. surely modern summer ties in with modern DEC-FEB (why is this m.winter a swear word?)..summers between 1989-2006 were often warm or hot..since then UK summers have reverted back to type
  4. Probably because that is the default weather setting for a UK winter...murky drizzly damp bland kind of mush..you might get a 2 weeks of cold and snow if you are lucky somewhere..otherwise i can see how a lot of the population get depressed esp in January.
  5. our poor summer continues...it is interesting that the UK had a poor summer last year and ours was great this year is the other way around. Here we have suffered from the Alaskan high as the UK suffered the Greenland high in previous summers...Alaska and the NW territories have had a hot dry summer whilst here it has been cool and rather wet...looks like this situation will continue for another week...many people are hoping for a dry warm September..this summer is similar to that of 2010 that was cool and stormy up to mid August when it dried out and warmed up somewhat...i would imagine something similar would happen as the the thunderstorm season now draws to a close in the next week to 10 days.
  6. that's was for 2 or 3weeks at a time at best..you try dealing with 6 months worth..and it is not clear blue skies day after day..you get those horrible dull very cold mid winter days that can last a week or more at a time..only compensation is that it never rains during the winter.
  7. Yep spend a winter in Canada and the novelty of cold and snow wears thin pretty rapidly
  8. i hate getting up in the dark...i get up for work at 5.30am and my brief 3 month stint of getting up when it is light is rapidly drawing to a close..sunrise is now past 6am here..was 5.20am in June..so for me the sun has gone for another year and im getting up in the twilight..another two weeks or so and the twilight will be gone and its back to total darkness then here in Alberta winter and the first snow is only a month away
  9. not for long 1 day now we are back to another cool unsettled spell for potentially another week..which by my reckoning leaves us 3 weeks before things start to cool of in general..i would love to have a dry sunny autumn
  10. only reached 10c yesterday in Calgary and dipped to near 0c last night
  11. 1982 was thundery but not hot..1984 was warm and thundery 1989 was hot and thundery esp June..1994 the same esp July...2004 had warm thundery August...June 2005 had some big storms and was hot..thereafter my mind is a blank..if you like thunderstorms come and live in Alberta for example the summer of 2010 had more storms than all of the above years put together and then some!
  12. yes seems to be a much more unsettled and cooler summer than last year so far....is cool and windy today with more showers to come
  13. so i was back in the UK for 2 weeks and brought the Hot sunny weather to the UK with me..now im back in Calgary with my UK sun tan..returned to quite a stormy few days...dry bright often sunny mornings before storms pop up during the afternoon and evening and then rinse and repeat the next day..it has been warm but not hot 21-25c.
  14. im coming back to the UK Friday and having just endure a sultry 35c+ yesterday..was hoping it would cool and fresh back home...spoil sports.
  15. exactly looking further ahead into the middle of next week...we could see some record breaking heat in our area...temps will be widely 33-35c..wouldn't be surprised to see some areas close to the American border get close to 38c (100f)
  16. I think that July 1994 is an often forgotten Hot month esp in the south..a bit like July 1983
  17. Looks nice...im coming back to the UK on 5th July..this will be the first time i have been home during the summer since 2009.
  18. Could be the worst flooding on record,,,most of Calgary is now shut down..downtown is cut off by flood waters..areas outside the city esp into the foothills to the south of the city have literally been washed away whole towns evacuated and underwater..still more rain to come and rivers will continue to rise for the next 24-36 hrs...looks like the deerfoot which is the main highway north south through Calgary will be shut soon as the flood water has already closed numerous slip roads on and off and is closing in on the motorway rapidly. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-23000926
  19. yep we are getting their weather..have a huge storm system over Western Canada..which is dumping huge amounts of rain here..causing widespread flooding and landslides..could be as much as 8 inches of rain by tomorrow in some places.
  20. yep virtually all of May and June has been wet..worse than normal i wager..we had a warm few days right at the start of May since then it has been cool and very wet with lots more to come...means it will be a nasty mosquito season with all this standing water..and they are already out in force!
  21. wasn't great here...lots of rain/storms Friday afternoon and evening...repeat performance on Saturday but yesterday was mostly dry though but never got above 18c all weekend
  22. may 1995 had a hot start as well mid to high 20s in the first week 10 days
  23. No such thing here as sleet..its either a rain/snow mix or a wintry mix...plus forecast for Canmore Friday is showers 12c
  24. Had a thundery weekend..storms Friday, Sat and Sunday..nothing major... typical Alberta June unstable weather conditions.
  25. i wonder if that August 2003 or 1990 set up had happened in the first two weeks of July how close to 40c it would have got bearing in mind the days are slightly longer than in August
