  1. that's the average for the whole winter of 09/10 not just a few days
  2. Is it i think the winter discussion thread started in mid August!
  3. Have noticed a big pattern change being shown for the western half of North America and the eastern Pacific...we see that limpet like ridge migrating north into Alaska and the arctic..this may in turn aid pressure to rise across Greenland and force the jet south..its a long way out still but is a similar pattern developing here that is akin to Dec 2010.
  4. this is 10 days away a lot can and will change across North America..always does..models no more reliable here than they are over there
  5. Drove into work at 5.30am this morning and wow it was +11c here...the average overnight low this time of year is more like -15c..big melt overnight..it felt more like a summer morning apart from the fact it was dark.
  6. I think this thread is more about the changing of the seasons and days getting shorter or longer are the first sign that things are about to change..and as always there is a little bit of anticipation of the coming summer or the coming winter as the days lengthen and shorten.
  7. only is some parts of Canada where i live this will be me with those charts
  8. Maybe early summer and mid autumn..if the weather is dry and sunny..winters are becoming a chore here..and spring is always cold and wet.
  9. Yea it said there was nothing to discuss but this thread is 41 pages long and is essentially the same thread in reverse...what that all about????
  10. Having been on this forum for many years..i think from memory..most winter forecasts i have read on here in the past always go for a colder second half of winter from late January and esp February being the coldest part of the season.
  11. What's not to like about Autumn 2000?
  12. Looks like we are in for a long mild spell of weather....at least a week of above freezing temps..could break 10c start - middle of next week...seems to be theme here that January can be very mild at times..in fact since i have been here only Jan 2011 was average or a little below...2010,12,13 and potentially 14 have been mild or very mild with little or no snow.
  13. Its not an opinion its a fact...as is having lots of rain and wind..both as bad as each other
  14. Yes the potential is there towards the end of the month more scope for high pressure to build...but where is the question?
  15. Having lots of snow and cold during the winter isn't all its cracked up to be..in fact its a pain in the backside
  16. The worst recorded cold outbreak in US history was February 1899..when a low of -19c was recorded in Florida of all places!
  17. Looking at the NH set up as a whole i dont see a pattern that would favour any cold outbreak across Western Europe in the foreseeable. Things are changing across N.America to a much milder set up and a eventual weakening jet over here..which would encourage a slowing of the Atlantic train towards the end of the month...overall a poor outlook for cold across both continents.
  18. but its not -30c in the Uk we are talking about conditions in the US ..their amenities and houses are no different than Canada
  19. Exactly CC i dont why this forum is going bonkers over it..when we had wind chills close to -50c cpl weeks ago no one batted an eyelid
  20. i have seen in drop from +6c to -15c in a couple of hours just a few weeks ago in Calgary
  21. its funny i have experienced this on numeruos occasions and its not as noticeable as you would think
  22. only one i can really think of is winter 1982/83 December was no great shakes and January was very mild..but February was cold with a CET of 1.5c or close to that value and was quite snowy from the midlands northwards..often stormy mild autumns and early winters continue on through to spring
  23. still think a shift in the pacific ridge is required...needs to shunt north into alaska which will reinforce any blocking pattern to the north and east of the UK and help to push the jet southwards.
  24. actually eastern USA and Canada had a very mild December 2010...not so Western US and Canada where it was cold...right now western half of North America is mild and the east is cold.
  25. for me it is the other way around im back in the uk and im loving the mild and no snow and im happy too see it continue until i return to the freezer in a weeks time...im really enjoying the budget burgers got sick of steak and chips
