  1. If you want to see an effect in our weather/climate then Katla is not the right volcano! Generally, volcanoes near the equator have a greater impact as the can block more sunlight. Katla is too far north so it would only block the weak sunlight that characterises the northern latitudes, especially during the late autumn and winter period. Karyo
  2. I found this article very interesting! http://www.examiner.com/green-activism-in-national/mysterious-volcano-has-scientists-baffled-as-it-continues-its-rapid-rise Although, they don't think that this south American stratovolcano is about to erupt, it is interesting that it is inflating very fast and could be 'transforming' into a supervolcano! Karyo
  3. Thanks Yamkin, It looks interesting! I wonder if the eruption is going to be moderate or another VEI5. It is good that the area is quite remote so not many people will be affected. Karyo
  4. Definately the first one! Quality, not quantity. Karyo
  5. Can we hope on any webcams or is it too remote? Karyo
  6. Good to see a sharp rise in sea ice extent over the last few days. Still close to the 2007 levels but the speed of increase is faster than the average. http://nsidc.org/data/seaice_index/images/daily_images/N_timeseries.png Karyo
  7. I am really glad as I could do with some good news today! Just think of this newly covered area reflecting the sunlight back into space! Karyo
  8. Thanks. So we should be expecting an Atlantic dominated Nov and December? My optimish from yesterday has just faded! :-( Karyo
  9. Months? GP said December and January so I would expect this showing on the stratospheric forecasts by late November? Karyo
  10. I suppose we should soon start seing some signs of pressure rise in Scandinavia based on Stuart's early thoughts? That may save us from the zonal train for the first half of winter. Karyo
  11. Yes, I might be worrying too early, I just don't like the high pressure over Europe as it can take forever to shift! Karyo
  12. According to the CFS map I expect the source of the cold in December to be the Continent rather than from the north. In other words, cold and dry with the occassional easterly bringing snow showers in the east coast of England. January is not so clear as even Iceland is having below average temperatures - this doesn't fit with the high pressure and the cold continental cold so maybe some polar maritime flow as well. Good to see Greenland above average on both Dec and Jan! February looking overal mild with southwesterlies (look how cold Greenland looks feeding the Atlantic systems. Scotland may benefit here if it stays on the northern side of the jet. Karyo
  13. This is developing into a nightmare autumn as far as I can see! The stubborn high pressure over the European continent is feeding warm air into Russia/western Siberia and it just doesn't want to shift! On a slightly brighter note, at least the ice is staying above the 2007 levels and increasing faster than the average rate for the time of the year. http://nsidc.org/data/seaice_index/images/daily_images/N_timeseries.png Karyo
  14. I love watching the pictures of the landscape! I definately have to visit El Hierro in the future! Karyo
  15. I am embarassed to say that I didn't know Turkey had volcanoes! According to the Global Volcanism page, it has 13! It looks very interesting with a lake inside its 5 mile caldera. http://en.wikipedia....Nemrut_(volcano) A bit more info here:http://www.volcano.s...fm?vnum=0103-02= The last eruption was in 1650! Karyo
  16. The satellite shows clear skies over Sicily so it should be smoke from Etna.
  17. I was just about to post this! I am surprised about the plume but I don't expect it to cause much disruption unless the eruption picks up again. Karyo
  18. This autumn so far reminds me of autumn 2006! The high pressure nested over the continent feeding mild weather and the jet was to the north and west. Of course that was an El Nino year but the similarity is quite striking. Hopefully, we won't get anything as mild as winter 2006/7 though. Karyo
  19. Nightmare material! However, a city break in Sofia or Bucharest sounds like a good idea this winter! Karyo
  20. Thanks coldfingers, It will be interesting to see how this eruption progresses. Although, I don't think it will be anything major happening from this volcano. Karyo
  21. Exactly, the usual assumption that what's happening in the southeast applies to the whole country! No drought here either! Karyo
  22. Yes, but they are brief events like Feb 2007! Most people want snow that sticks and stays for days! Karyo
