Currently one of the coldest periods I've known along with dec 2008 I think it was(minus 42)

Currently minus 41. Wind chills down to minus 50. Even businesses are closing down for the day. Not sure I remember that happening before.

I fancied a Friday fry up too. Oh well.

can’t even compute or comprehend that level of coldness. And that coldness knocks the weebly wobbly Madmod thread into a cocked hat.  How do you survive?

Sorry @cheeky_monkey  seem to have embedded my response in your post….

Snow kicking off in Oregon today.   Arctic air meets warm air from Hawaii.    Blast of bitterly cold air funneling down the Columbia gorge.

Our pals in Indiana are currently sunny at -15C and forecast to go down to -22C tonight. That is pretty cold for there and a shock to the system after what has been a very mild winter. Back to normal or slightly above next week after a cold and at times snowy (though mostly light) week.

Quite an interesting sequence as the USA has seen exceptionally cold spells in January in years ending in 4 for quite a while now. January 1994, January 2004, January 2014 and now January 2024 have all been either extremely cold or seen extremely cold spells. May be a reason for the run of Atlantic dominated ones here in the same years that someone posted a while back.

Buffalo, New York state was hammered yesterday, with lake effect snows, expected to deliver about 2ft of snow to the area as heavy bands of snow passed through.

The National Weather Service says the South Buffalo community received 60.5 inches, or more than five feet of snow during this week's lake effect event.

Reagan National airport by Washington hit 80f, the record January temperature and the earliest 80f by some weeks. I know that the temperatures in the East of the US can vary hugely in Winter but that is just silly!

I do think that the sometimes extreme weather in the areas from Washington to New York do give us here an impression that they are always freezing and snowy but in reality the average Jan max in Washington is nearly 7C, warmer than it is here and not much colder than London.

The Alaskan city has seen more than 100in (245cm) of snowfall this season, the earliest accumulation ever of that amount.

Punxsutawney Phil has emerged from his burrow in Gobbler's Knob to announce he had not seen his shadow.

America can therefore expect an early spring.

matty40s Looks like another wet winter for California then after last year's brutal torrent. Complete opposite of what was going on ten years ago.
