Polar Maritime Here's hoping for clear skies & impacts that aren't during daylight hours!

Jamie M Lovely photos! Shame about the cloud passing through but at least you were able to get something. I was going to head out when the alerts went off but it was misty, which always seems to be the case whenever something pops up

 Southern Storm

Always find the alerts are way too slow here for seeing any kind of aurora - I've always got starvisor.ru open on another tab and briefly glance at it every so often on a night where -Bz is pretty sustained (<-10 generally). Gives a good idea of when the oval is building and about to burst, etc and enables me to dash to a window or outside to try and nab some rays if I see them pop up!

Jamie M Not heard of starvisor, just had a look, lot of clear skies and some Aurora over Russia now.

Jamie M Let's hope it's not during daylight hours & the clouds stay away!

This does look interesting...On a Friday night, clear skies forecasted (until early hours at least) and with very little moon to worry about...what could go wrong 😄 I'm already on standby.

Its tricky given the uncertain timings but I might just head-up further north later on to escape the Manchester/Sheffield city lights and setup somewhere in the Yorkshire Dales given the G4 'Severe' event is guaranteed (99%) of producing Aurora's seen as far south as Spain. The Carrington Event is on record as a G5 'Extreme' so we're almost on-par with that one.

Interesting. Twilight is becoming a problem for a lot of us now, but maybe a chance between midnight and 2am if we’re lucky.

'The effects of the September 2, 1859, solar storm were unprecedented. People saw auroras as far south as the Caribbean and Mexico. At some more northerly latitudes, it's said the sky was so bright with auroras that birds, thinking it was morning, began to sing.'

Lt. Dan I use windy app but haven't checked cloud cover yet.

Drive inland?

weatherobsuk that sounds like paradise!  Would like to see that in my lifetime but obviously now it would destroy the power grid but it’s only a matter of time tbh

@Sprites Will probably be the plan.  A few of the other models are also suggestive of cloud encroaching.

weatherobsuk I would for sure if I was that much further North, you might also have a better chance of clearer skies.

A good dive into tonight's geostorm expectations, it seems that from the model forecast it's around 1am when the impact begins.

So is tonight going to be spectacular do we think?  Even from Devon or Cornwall?

Fen Wolf It's been visible in Cornwall a few times this last 12 months even with much weaker storms.

kar999 hopefully someone will be able to drive me to a darker location like dartmoor or bodmin moor if it kicks off later.  Getting excited for this!  Didn’t realise it was a strong one 🤞🏻

Lt. Dan  how far inland though? Probably west of London.

Fen Wolf Yes it's possible if it reaches G4.
