Getting a bit of a battering at the minute. Heavy horizontal snow for the past 40 mins.

Still thawing at the same time though, heard what I thought was a rumble of thunder, only to realise it was snow coming off the roof and onto my car :D

I was up in Micky Moor just as it started.

Quite heavy here now too and settling. Temp 0.5º, dew point -1.3º.

Moderate snow now falling vertically as the wind has eased off. Big fluffy flakes, come to Daddy.

Were the roads bad up to Kirk Merrington and down to Chilton?

Pretty intense here for a while, though doesn't seem to have added a great deal to what we had already.

Still snowing as I type, but has eased off a bit.

Nah the roads weren't too bad through Kirk Merrington and Chilton. There is easily more snow in Spenny than Kirk Merrington, which is unusual.

temp rising quickly here again, 1.3oC.

i must say this mornings eather has been pretty odd.

Temp fluctuations, rain, sleet, snow, hail and a band of precipitation which didnt move much. wasn't exactly how it was forecast.

It's done what it said on the tin here. An hour and a half so far of snow which has settled. Maybe a couple cm's fresh, I'll go and measure when it is finished.

The cold air is now starting to tuck in behind. Temp here has dropped from a max of 1.4c down to 0.7c now. No shower activity in the vacinity though and it i think it will be at least 6 before there are any (it will be colder then anyway).

Thankfully the band has cleared south of Cleadon now- it has left a slushy mess on surfaces where the snow was "used" yesterday, but areas with untouched snow cover probably still have about 7-8cm. Temp up at 1.9C, but since there is no precipitation I would've expected it to get higher with the wind off the sea, suggesting that the cold air is digging in.

Some convective cloud already becoming apparent but just cumulus at this stage, no obvious signs of any cumulus congestus or cumulonimbus, but certainly blue sky appearing to the north. I think those snow showers over east Scotland are a red herring as they haven't moved much during the day, and probably won't overnight as the winds will be close to blowing from due east. What we need to watch for is showers developing out in the North Sea to our east, ahead of what's happening in E Scotland.

:( Well strange, Kirk Merrington and Ferryhill usually get a load more than Spenny.

Been a strange day weather wise all round.

Pretty much stopped here now and the winds have eased considerably.

Im quite dissapointed because the snow layed wonderfully between 1:15 and 2:15 but then rain to 2:30 destroyed it and this snow atm isnt replacing the snowcover although it is moderate

Nice photos Peter!

Definitely a bit more there than in Stanley, but that's no surprise.

Also just checking the radar and there are further showers developing on the southern end of the current lot in the North Sea. This is where our showers later will come from.
