I've just come back from a walk and took some photos

New ones are at the bottom smile.gif

Some good ones there. Interesting that some of them show evidence of drifting. I haven't seen any in this area so far, which being near the coast here is a bit of a surprise.

Sounds like drifting might be an issue now though.ph34r.gif

I commented on this a couple of days ago. When you can't see your feet, or people next to you, caused by snow blowing at 60mph plus. Very surreal and scary.

Very accurate description. I would also add that you can barely stand up and certainly NOT ski. Mountain rescue will however go out in these conditions to attend to the foolhardy and that is why these forums are so important in educating people with regard to severe winter conditions no matter what the altitude.

Like I said earlier the more persistant snow for the region will come in later tonight. Looks like the first and smaller batch will miss me

I agree with Lizzie.

The web cam certainly is not showing a blizzard in Ipswich, nor is it showing what it would be like after one — maybe just before they're about to get one. nonono.gif

Without a doubt we have seen blizzard conditions in Ipswich (im west) alot over the last 2 hours... probably a couple of extra inches in this time too.

I agree drifting snow could well be a significant problem later. I believe the MO has flash warnings for drifting snow, not often you see them in the south of England.

I don't like to winge but yet again I'm finding myself watching significant snow miss Norwich. That said I'm not totally sure why I want any more - Went sledging today and in places the snow was too deep anyway!

These pictures tried to capture the intensity of the snow fall and wind. One to show the depth here, we have the LEAST snow out of anywhere in Ipswich, east Ipswich has about double this!

Mine happened when I was skiing. Last person on the lifts before wind closed them - high level, above the tree line. The wind blew me along to a faster than running pace. But the first I knew of it was when I could feel I was moving, rather than see anything. I inevitably crashed. When I could eventually see, my brother had crashed right next to me - literally a foot or so away. I was lucky in that I was then on a sheltered part of the mountain and could get down, as the wind had dropped.

Another way of describing it is like when you first go into a dark room or a deep cave, where everything is black. It's just the reverse and everything is uniform white.

I pity anyone who gets caught in this situation for any length of time.

If you look at the radar, there is a big band of persistant snow over Belguim, The Netherlands and parts of France and Germany which is heading right towards us
