London & Se Cold Spell Discussion

Not quite what he said to be fair. He still thinks a return to cold conditions is likely after a mild blip Jan 15-25. Indeed he notes this may well persist into March. However, and this is the caveat, the cold in Feb may not be able to top this extraordinary spell of weather we've had for the past 4 weeks or so. Given the duration of the cold spell, and the extent of the low temperatures that have been recorded, I do not think this is surprising. But in theory we could have a few less but still cold spells in Feb that deliver more snow to some districts than they have seen cumulatively during this cold spell. Hope this makes sense.

So I'm still optimistic having read Joe's thoughts. Mild for 10 days or so from midmonth, but then turning progressively colder once again with a wintry Feb very possible and extending into March. :shok:

The key part of Joe B's column:

Joe B's column in full: http://www.accuweather.com/ukie/laminate floori-europe-blog.asp?partner=forecastfox

That was my reading of it too.

Well, still going here although looks to be on its last legs-

just under 1cm of snow, with a fresh dusting of granular stuff in the last 30 mins- roads covered as well-

temp down to 0.1C, air dried out- drip drip has stopped-

enjoyed the brief flirt with the beasterly..... :shok:

It's still snowing and settling

You must be approaching a foot of new snow by the sounds of it

As I mentioned yesterday but nobody replied to my knowledge

I think March will feature a lot of disturbed weather and I expect March to be worse than February

Look at historical cold years and see how February and March pan out

Is probably more use than looking at normal model output as they are not 'programmed' for this sort of winter :)

Fairly persistent drizzle now. We've been unlucky tonight, once again.

Maybe thats because forecasting March weather now is a tad foolish.

I take your point but Im trying to say lets look at %s based on what we have already experienced

this winter. Not a certainty but historical data has some merit.

All turning to hail if this is correct http://www.raintoday.co.uk/

The Radar has reverted to the original. The one you've been watching over the past days is the Premium Version which was avaliable to all.

That was my reading of it too.

I was just hopeful of a little less colder weather for a while!!! Even if like the 80's just for a week or two.

:)

Just had another look outside, and its snowing, but its very wet snow and the flakes are very small. Giving the slightest covering on the cars and pavements. Not on the road. Its not even worth calling it a covering. More like an icy, slushy mess.

So, is anyone going to help poor Yamkin dig himself out of his ten foot drifts in the morning?

Nope, me neither. :)

When I run a loop on the radar, the precip keeps building from the Thames and doesn't reduce......a streamer???

Sounds good

I took it down the Estuary & pointed it towards Bexleyheath!!!

Touch wood - its worked!!! still heavy fine snow here- temp now at 0.0C- full cover here- which is prety impressive coming from a wet afternoon with 70% thaw from 6cm-

All roads covered & the key for me that temsp are getting good now is when the cars go bye the ground is still white as opposed to the wet slush they were leaving earlier-

depth around 1/1.2 cm this eve-

Just had a look. Its quite strange, something might not be right with the radar. It almost seems as though the showers are building over London rather than streaming through from the estuary. But the very fine snow is getting a bit heavier. Very small flakes that looks like drizzle, but when you look out the window properly, its snow leaving an icy covering.
