An Icelandic commenter at Eruptions reports that the Iceland Meteorologial Office do not expect an eruption at Eyjafjallajökull. The volcano may get over its current bout of restlessness and calm down again, as happened with the intrusion events of 1994, 1999 and 2009. It clearly needs careful watching, however, as does its large and destructive neighbour, Katla.

Oops.

Yes, I had a wry smile at that comment.

Goodness, I pray the bigger Katla doesn't go up.

NATS

Thousands of travellers are facing a weekend of misery after the suspension of flights in and out of the UK was extended until at least 7am tomorrow as the cloud of volcanic ash from Iceland spread across Europe.

The National Air Traffic Services (Nats) said the situation was worsening amid warnings from scientists that the eruptions from the Eyjafjallajokull volcano could continue for months, causing unprecedented travel chaos.

Last night hopes had been raised of some respite from the disruption, which began on Thursday. Airspace had been opening across Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England, and Nats had said there may be a window for some domestic flights before 7pm today

Be careful.

I read that you can easily scratch your

car paintwork with this ash.

It needs a thorough water wash off.

A very telling quote from one of the airline forums:

No one seems to know, but if you conjecture that 200,000 people transit LHR everyday, 40% of those are transfer that means for every day just at LHR 60,000 people are at their destination point waiting to come home, many of these are in the US and other continents although a number in Europe will be trickling back over / under land and over sea. Multiply that for each day say up to a week (average trip?), add in the other airports, factor in that this happened at the end of the Easter holidays when flights would have been very busy with people returning home, and the number of British people alone could be in the hundreds of thousands after a week of this. Add France, Germany the Netherlands etc.

just mentioning the major volcano could be triggered off as there is a connection with both of the volcano's....

and no sign of this current one stopping with a possibility of this for months...

Been a cracking day, clear and no con-trails .. would say the sky is a milky blue rather than blue so I assume it's either high cloud or the effects of the ash, I thought I could smell a definite 'niff' in the air mid morning ... but that's been replaced now by BBQ's . Be interesting to see if any of this ash falls this evening here in the Midlands as the car only had the usual Summer dusting this morning.

Makes you wonder how Northern Europe will cope with long term grounding of flights if this continues for any period of time .. .. :drinks:

Most people will carry on as normal I would think. We may need to change our diets slightly if food can't be air freighted in, but surely anything non-perishable can be loaded onto boats?

I wonder how much ash will come down with any showers over night and into tomorrow?
