Lava flow

Hooray, just got both picture on the Thorolfsfelli cams. All these wonderful views have been worth waiting for.

Thanks coldfingers. I am trying to swot up as my six year old is mad about volcanoes (amongst other things). He loves things like this and my knowledge isn't as good as it should be.

Interesting quotes from Eruptions blog earlier:

The new lava has been tested: 'No wonder it's explosive... 61,5%SiO2... That would qualify as dacitic...' http://www2.norvol.hi.is/page/IES-EY-CEMCOM

and

'Dacitic? After three weeks of continous basaltic to basaltic - andesitic eruptions? With a fresh influx of lava from the depths forecast from the recent EQ activity, ie more primitive = basaltic magma? Isn't this eruption, very peculiarly, working in reverse? What a reprobate our Lady Eyja turns out to be!'

Perhaps we have old magma being forced out by the newer magma. Pity we don't have the earlier chemical reports to compare to the latest report.

Temperature of the very whitest bit - scale runs from blue to white - values at top and bottom show end values of scale. I don't think this way of measuring is terribly accurate tho'.

Does anyone know what that white blob that has been on the infrared image for a while now might be? It appears as hot as the main eruption.

Water flooding down the glacier on the left of the cleft rock at the moment - on the voda cam zoom in. http://www.vodafone.is/eldgos/en

surely 26.9 cant mean celcius :unknw:

As I said, from this distance it is likely to not be as accurate as it could be.

The lower one downslope from the eruption is probably the lava flow peeking through a gap.

:) Mine isn't very good on volcanos either as although I was educating my son at home to GCSE standards, (because of bullying!) we only scratched the surface of vulcanology and went into more depth on geology instead. Wish I had had a volcano going then! Lessons would have been easier with such a vivid demonstration. Especially thermal camera to watch!

I have thought for days the lava must reach the end of the glacier but now it seems to have stalled and I am starting to wonder if it ever will reach the end. Will the cooling lava dam things up and prevent it flowing further I wonder?

Can anyone tell me how I can copy a picture of the webcams?

There was a fantastic picture of the plume reaching the top of the screen on the Hvolsvelli cam and i would have loved a copy of it.

Just right click on the image, change it to full screen and then take a screen shot I suppose. My laptop won't take screen shots without a separate screen shot program, but with most others there should be some option or set of buttons to press to take one methinks.

Many thanks to both of you. When my son is home from college I will get him to show me, he is better at following instructions on computers than I am. :good:

LadyP, managed it myself with the superb instructions you both gave. Many many thanks.

Indeed it is! Thanks for posting it!

It must mean that this volcano will continue to attract our interest for some time yet! It could be an interesting summer!

:good::clap:

Thanks for the encouragement. I have only had 'lessons' on the computer from my kids so am still learning really.

Does anyone think there could be lightning show up on that plume tonight as it is so high or does that require a more specialised set of circumstances?
