Here in Central Scotland I had a hail shower from a group of showery activity to the North of Ireland. It's very cold and windy here too! But how's it in Ireland and how are you all feeling about the prospects of snow in the coming days?

How's it going Wintry Tale! Very cold and windy out tonight! Definately feels more seasonal! I think the prospects are looking good for the upcoming cold spell! Things should look a bit clearer as we head towards the weekend!

Crazy evening here, probably the heaviest hail I've ever seen at around 6.20pm, about an inch of hail on the ground and there's still some lying 2 hours later! Since then we've also had thunder and lightning, very strong gusts and sleet. A good evening of weather watching :)

Snow level was around 300-400m today, a covering on the hills but only sleet at sea level

Dew points, 850hpa, 500mb, freezing level and surface temps all contribute to snowfall marginality.

And most importantly precipitation.

Certainly feel that their good be a decent snow event over the weekend, perhaps not down to sea level. Places like Pomeroy should see plenty and perhaps blizzards in a gale force north westerly.

Feels great out this evening. Nice to get rid of the boring mild stuff and finally feel the first bite of cold!

The Valentia sounding at 6pm showed uppers of about -3/4C, and several stations have dew points around 0-1C. There should be a few snowy mountain tops by morning at least.

Early next week and mid next week both looking better than tonight though. Still not widespread snow potential, but a very welcome change imo.

This is the hail shower we had earlier, >32mm/hr at its centre and it made a direct hit on the town. The thunderstorm afterwards passed to the north towards Buncrana but we still got a glancing blow here with plenty of distant rumbles and flashes

Now you are talking MS :drinks:

It is my belief and I know a few of you have mentioned it that we could be in for some interesting weather from the North West this year....

Jez Harps you are doing brilliant for the thunder and lightening this past week :good:

Well at least we can't say that the weather has been boring recently!

Yeah nice to get some active weather after all the boredom of the past few months, believe it or not before this week I'd only heard one rumble of thunder all year though so its well overdue!

Another very wet and windy evening tonight, squall line showing up on the radar off the west coast which might be interesting later

Yeah Harps just back from walking the dogs and it's very windy out tonight. Just wish the weekend would hurry up and arrive so we can have a better idea of what to expect next week! We are in a great position to do well out of these set ups.

Well winter has finally arrived, and it definitely feels like it outside. Things still looking interesting for next week but models still not pinned on details. Somewhere will see the first snowfalls of this winter. Even some low lying areas. Some very active shower activity also due to the +0.5c SST Anomalies and the very cold upper air profiles. Exciting start to Winter 2011/12 even though some think otherwise.

I think they can be forgiven for thinking otherwise after the start we had last year!

But yeah, great to finally have some interesting weather.

I will be more than a little annoyed if I don't wake up on Monday morning to a little bit of the white stuff. As for you on your mountain I would get the snow shovels out.
