Dad's just sent a pic of the front garden and it's definitely over 50% snow cover, very icy and snowy footpaths aswell.

So there is 2 days of snow lying this month, above the average of 1 day, so I am indeed pleased with the month :)

MIdlands seems to be the place for snow this year - Cheshire gap streamers have give a load to peak district, derbyshire, leicestershire, etc.

Lol I wish!

Some parts have done ok, but here in Nottingham everything has missed and I haven't seen a flake of snow here yet.

Wish I could have brought Stanleys weather down here, or even better Consetts!

Hello all. Hope you can help!

I am spending xmas in Consett - travelling up this Wednesday afternoon and travelling back the following Tuesday. Any rough ideas whether I'll get snow when I'm there / will I be snowed in? I'd ideally not like to be stuck there!

The frost hasn't melted in the shade yet after a maximum of 1.6°C - is this the coldest day of 2011? I probably have forgotten a similar day in January mind! Also, there was still some lying snow on the verges near Cramlington this morning, and the car thermometer was reading 0°C at 12:00.

I highly doubt you'll see anything this side of Christmas, and even if it happens to snow afterwards from a marginally cold westerly it'll not be much. Even last year when 30-60cm fell across the North East you would probably have been able to struggle down to the A1 on most days, although it was often dodgy in the mornings. The models show it being mild for the foreseeable anyway so I wouldn't worry about that.

Been out and about this afternoon with my camera, taken some pictures of the snow covered mountains, absolutely stunning today with the sunshine. Really cold day, temp hovering around freezing whilst I was inland 1.1c here near the coast with an early frost setting in. :)

My dad texts that the snow is now mostly just ice and the ground is very cold and suspect to more ice patches as of 1507, he also says that it was -0.1c, meaning not only its the earliest air frost of the year, but most likely the coldest maximum temperature.

I'm betting some of the higher parts of the region have had an ice day today.

Looking like a messy day tomorrow with freezing rain a possibility with ground temps very low.

Starting to rise . -0.9°C after a low of -1.6°C earlier on.

Does everyone who reports on here have a screened/properly positioned sensor?

my station is currently on a trampoline pole, so not getting a true wind speed/direction, but hoping to get it on the chimney just after new year, if not before

It's probably better where it is, more air flow over it and you want the thermometer around 1.5m above ground level to get comparable readings.....I think.

Dropped down to -2.1º earlier this evening but rising steadily now and back up to -0.2º now. Only reached 1.4º today making it the coldest day of the winter so far.

Quite a bit of snow still lying around Hexham this morning, though mainly above about 150m it seems.

The lying snow level seems to be well over 300m in Cumbria today with just a little bit of ice here, and I'm near Penrith at 210m asl.

I would think that above 350m there has been a lot of snow today, temperatures at 2-3c at sea level, around 1-2c at 250m, so dew points will be lingering around -1c/0c around 300/400m.

Another good day for the pennines ski resorts, but rain and very mild condtions should melt snow even at the tops by friday.

3.7C and rain at Cleadon following a frosty night. There is still a tiny bit of snow cover about, but it should be gone by tomorrow I think.

I managed two Met Office "snow days" out of this spell- Saturday had about 80% snow cover on grass/pavements at 9am and Sunday just managed it with about 60% cover, then this morning was down to 30% cover. The snow partially thawed under sleet showers and then refroze leaving ice, which meant it was more of a pain to navigate on foot, but it was good for the "snow day" stats as it also helped the covering to sustain longer.
