And just over a week ago it was still warm and quite humid. Something went wrong over the weekend!

I think the fabled Manchester storm drifted over towards the Leeds area this afternoon..

Was in Otley with heavy rain however my son reported a decent flash of lightning and torrential rain in Pudsey.

The back edge of that storm was incredibly defined. Terrific edge and mammatus like...Will upload by phone later..good.gif

That flash of lightning my son saw yesterday made the news.. He said it was big..!

Already had a seperate thread but worth a watch again...biggrin.png

Seem to have exploded as they crossed the Channel. Funny, that never seems to happen the other way around......

Why is that?

As we start to move into a new season, things look very quiet for a while:

I hope that isn't storm chances over, they never really began in Eastbourne!

nonono.gif Coast,we still have Autumn yet!! biggrin.png September can be really good for storms, especially down your way! something to do with the sea temps I guess! I know the SE hasen't done well again this year, but don't give up yet Autumn may make up for what you've missed this summer and throw you a few surprises .smile.png

Awww I'm always upbeat about the possibilities, but just recently I've felt left out of the party!

A Spanish plume would be nice before winter kicks in.

Just a few dates of storms that I remember well from late in the season:

21st October 2004 - squall line with lightning, hail the size of marbles and 70mph gusts of wind

11th September 2006 - Plume thunderstorms with some awesome lightning

14th September 2006 - Thunderstorms and a tornado in Derby

If there are no thunderstorms in September it will be the first time I have not seen a storm in September since I started chasing in 2004. So I would hope its not all over yet :)

We had a storm in September last year.. dumped up to 15mm in places in less than 25 minutes, it was more of an intense squall with thunder and lightning.

We never get storms here in September here: even January is better - thundersnow from N Sea convection.

Now that's what I'm talking about!!!

Incidentally saw a lot of geese on the move yesterday, very early for that (about 6 weeks or so). Anyone else noticed this and do they (the geese) know something we don't?

Interesting snippet from estofex for southern europe.

It is interesting to note that at this moment several models develop it into a hurricane-like structure (e.g. warm core and eye) on Monday, and the currently unusually high sea surface temperatures would assist such development.

Moreover, according to the MetO Fax charts, it won't be going anywhere fast. I seem to recall a similarly intense storm develop down there within recent years. Nothing is straightforward now with regard to global weather patterns. How long our current dry non-stormy spell lasts is anyone's guess and the lack of foreign imports each year makes me admire any convective and Thunderstorm days which do come along.

I don't think I've ever heard of or seen a storm like that across the Mediterranean - it certainly is a bit worrying in that it is a static system that is forecast to intensify and become more akin to something usually found in the Gulf of Mexico. I admit I have not paid attention to the weather in that area in a detailed scientific way before, but it still appears to be very unusual to me.

As for here - the post-frontal weather today has included very warm sunny spells and some large towering cumulus clouds are passing my house as I type. I certainly wouldn't rule out a storm just looking outside, though I know it appears unlikely from the models and in a high pressure environment.

I'm heading to Rome on Tuesday, so i'm watching this low pressure system near Italy. Can i expect some thunderstorms?

I'd say yes, next to definitely !
