Cold weather alert extended

Current alert level: Level 3 - Cold Weather Action

Issued at: 0832 on Fri 7 Dec 2012

There is a 90% probability of severe cold weather/icy conditions/heavy snow between 0000 on Monday and 0800 on Tuesday in parts of England. This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services. Please refer to the national Cold Weather Plan and your Trust's emergency plan for appropriate preventive action.

Less cold over the next few days with higher daytime temperatures than of late so the mean temperature criteria is unlikely to be met this weekend, despite overnight frosts. There is now growing confidence that into the start of next week very cold air originating from the east or northeast will spread across the whole of England. An east or northeasterly flow at times will bring snow showers, particularly to the east of England, these sometimes heavy, and leading to locally significant accumulations. At present this spell of very cold weather looks set to last through much of next week and it is likely this alert will need to be extended.

I just looked up to see when the strongest Siberian high pressure was recorded - Guess which winter - yes 1968/69 - it appears yet again.

Yeah,has been quiet on here recently,most seem to be on MOD thread.Just looked at latest GFS and think everything still all to play for this week and beyond.Whilst i dont have the expertise of others on MOD thread,the last 2 or 3 GFS runs seem to me on backing away on the speed of the Atlantic coming in by Wed night /Thurs.If,and it is a big if, trend continues then it is possible that the Huge High over Scandi may try to shift a little back to the West ,which could make all the difference to us in the UK.Take into account the pattern of the Jet still seems to be NW/SE and running to South of UK and the angle of depressions coming in from the Atlantic just altering a little and we could have a snow event in the uk by end of the week,and not just a transitional snow/rain event.Obviousily,all the pieces of the jigsaw will have to come to place and whilst i would like it to happen being a lover of snow and cold,i must strss the chances are still only about 20-25% at best IMO.Just my thoughts and basic understanding ot the matter but there have been such huge differences in the model runs since late last week(It was only last Thurs it looked 80% certain of a big 10 day coldspell and snow event,yet 24 hours later all models ditched that idea!!).I honestly dont think we will definetly know until as late at Tues morning about events for Thurs/Friday,but interesting times ahead.One other small thing also to give cold lovers hope is the amount of snow cover already over continental Europe.

We may get a dusting here in the East Midlands next Weds/Thurs if the charts prove to be correct.Not getting too excited though as we've had Snow forecast twice here in the last week but had nothing more than plain old rain!!.After next Thursday I think the chances decrease all together to be honest.

He posted another GFS chart the other day with snow accumulations over the UK for this week, although i doubt he'll be bothered we narrowly missed out on this weeks beasterly cos the rest of Europe, excluding the UK, Western France and Spain are in the freezer still, and UK is still below average.

Which of course therefore made his assumption correct regarding the cold weather prediction he made, unfortunately for the UK, we are only going to get a "tickle" of that cold air. It must be said, the cold air over Scandi is most certainly not the coldest we've ever seen but snowfall is quite widespread though.
