Morning all. :)

Some places near here will be going through a great sunrise at the moment. Not here though, as low cloud appeared at the wrong time.

Morning everyone. Dry and mild here. Currently 8.9c. Time to get some washing done. Yippee clapping.giflazy.gif

Can I ask a stoopid question please. What does SSW stand for and what does it mean? I'm sure a South South Westerly is not the answer.

Morning Milly, here we go:

Here's what the Americans are saying on their side of the puddle:

A warming of the Strat looks to have already begun:

Here's a good guide to stratospheric temperatures:

http://www.netweathe...-tutorial;sess=

In warmer stratospheric conditions the jet stream takes a more meandering path due to a weaker polar vortex. This allows cold air to spill further south. If the UK is in the firing line of the cold air then this will lead to colder (often more settled) and possibly snowier weather.

Thank you Coast, that is extremely helpful. So this is a major SSW I presume if the vortex is expected to split. And it happens every 2 years on average. So is this similar to what happened in Dec 2010?

Now we know from the Strat temperature tutorial that the jetstream plays an important part in the flow of air into the UK and can help us if we want to get the Gold Medal of Winter conditions. So what's the jet doing?:

http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=jetstream;sess=

There is of course a tutorial here:

http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=jetstream-tutorial;sess=

The polar jet is the strongest as the temperature gradient across Polar and mid latitude regions is greatest. This is increased again in the Northern Hemisphere during winter. Both the subtropical jet and the polar jet travel from west to east and both would travel uniformly and evenly around the earth if it wasn.t for other influencing factors.
In winter the temperature of the stratosphere can also have an effect on the strength and position of the jet stream. The cooler the polar stratosphere, the stronger the polar/ tropical differential becomes; encouraging the jet stream to gain in strength. The warmth of the landmasses and oceans (such as the El Nino Southern Oscillation) can also have a bearing on the strength and amplitude of the jet stream.

Morning all.

Cloudy and 10.2C here. Don't think we'll be seeing much sun over the next few days, although it will be dry.

Blimey, you lot have posted many links of a rather scientific nature, tis good to see. As I haven't long surfaced and my head cold wants to revert to taking hold of my chest, I'll pass on anything too technical for now. cray.gif

The SSW will be the key to making or breaking this winter and likewise, if we miss its consequences, poor ole GPs forecast could be quite a long way out. The main influence I took from GPs forecast was a bitter January across Europe, so that is where a big change needs to start occurring and it may well do. Anyway, as Coast stated, those guys in there, know their stuff big time and I recommend you stick with them.

http://forum.netweat...40#entry2462312

Another link worth following if just to see the progress of the Snow and Ice is the one shown below.

http://forum.netweat...60#entry2461351

I must admit that now the SSW is seemingly under way or if not will be in days, it will feel like a long wait before its effects are felt thereafter. Please bear in mind, as others have stated the effects can miss us in their entirety and will not be propogated downwards until at least 10 to 14 days afterwards. Before this occurs, there will in any case, be some colder air to feed on, as JP, Ben_Cambs and myself have been expecting for a while. The 11th January is the key date for the first changeover IMHO. good.gif
