Everything frozen solid here this morning after a hard frost. A bank of cloud moving slowly in off the Irish Sea... Could make things interesting!

light snow shower left a very slight dusting here. I think that might be it for this cold spell!

Snowing heavy here in Castlereagh.

Took the day off work because I'm really not well and have no energy to attempt to tackle the snow in the car.

I love that you put working from home in quotations :D ... I would have been 'working from home' too only I have this cold/throat thing so I'm not doing any work at all - movies and bed :)

Starting to brighten up here ... few spits of snow, not much though - however it was snowing heavy most of the morning...

Looked on rain today and there could be some more heavy snow after lunch if the temperatures stay down .. What do you guys think? I don't really know an awful lot but just going by the rain today radar, those are my suspicions ..

Had a lovely afternoon outside clearing the snow with the neighbours. Some whom ive never even spoken to before.

Given that most of the worlds Political hotspots appear to be in desert regions, my solution to world peace is snow.

nice one, snowy. shows it like it was and still is tonight, the only difference being it's not snowing, at least yet. Been out allday so not really caught up but I can see some showers heading onto the east coast. Edited by skywatcher

Yeh it did...

It was snowing really heavy this morning - but went through a period of rain this afternoon (I've been up here all day - off work with flu) - so strange ..

Do you see those showers from rain today? How do you determine if these will be snow or rain? Dew point? Dew point where? I'm very limited in my knowledge lol blush.png ..

Snowy _ in answer to yr query. Hopefully, one of the more knowledgeable members will pop online and be able to help you more directly _ I'm crawling off to bed having had almost no sleep last night _ but till then, look in the learning zone. John Holmes ha a good guide on what to look for if it might snow. dew points you can find on sites like www.xcweather.co.uk. Come back with questions yr sure to want answering_the more you learn the more questions you have.

Many things effect snow falling.

Firstly, temperatures! A good guide is when you have upper air temps (on charts as T850) of -8 or more is the best way, however, a continental flow of -5 or even -4 is often good enough.

Thickness is also important... Look for the 528 dam line, if it's there about or lower, that's a good sign too.

Dew points below -1 are also favourable...

When you have all these, then precipitation is the final ingredient!!!

You can get snow when some of these figures are marginal, however, if as suggested, we get a Greenland high pressure cell setting up, look for a deep set northerly flow, with -8/-10 upper air temps, and a sub 528 dam line and you should be game on!!!

Here's hoping February brings this to us all...

Someone correct me if im wrong but i think another problem could be the fact that we have had a slack airflow which means many of the showers that have developed over the irish sea have been given more time to take some heat from the sea when they are developing. A stronger airflow would mean less modification.
