It's raining/sleeting so heavily outside and the ground is so wet, I just can't see it settling, even if it does snow. It'd be lovely but just think it'll be a load of bluster and rain!

yes even where I am, next to the peak district its just heavy sleet atm :(

the ground is so soaking wet now will the snow settle when/if it finaly changes to it? lets hope so!

The meto amber warning gives totals up to 15cm, do we think thats still achievable? Sheffield is right in the middle of the zone, i guess its wait and see what we wake up to!

Sorry for butting in, but I just came by to see how you guys are doing up here! Aswell as other threads! The snow will settle if it wants to! In January, it rained/sleeted all day here, before finally turning to snow, but the ground was soaked at this time. Slowly, but surely, about half an hour later, it started settling! If it does settle on wet ground, one thing I would say, is be careful! It was slushy ice under the snow, making it very slippy underfoot!

Looks like it will be a while before the next shower judging by the radar- but of course there's about another 12 hours before any milder air moves in. Temperature fell to 1.9C in the end as a result of that sleet/snow shower- too warm for anything to lie on the ground, but dramatic stuff while it happened.

Re. snow settling on wet ground, wet ground makes a difference in marginal situations with light snow, but if the snow is heavy enough and the temperature/humidity low enough (such that flakes aren't already starting to melt as they hit the ground) it will lie. In most cases I find that air temperatures of 0.5C or below allow snow to settle quite easily, while it will settle at 0.6-1.0C if it is heavy enough. If dewpoints are well below zero you can add a bit to those figures (e.g. on a spring day of sunshine and snow showers, when I've known snow settle at temps of 2C) but that isn't applicable here.

Similar conditions here horizontal heavy snowfall.

I find these set-ups provide the same amount of convection as an easterly with -10 uppers, the main difference been the uppers from a north westerly make conditions rather marginal.
