PV still showing signs of moving from canada on the pub run and really good hieghts to our north/northeast giving us a straight easterly and maybe a second undercut on the way

You might be ok for a bit, seems that the milder sector aloft has caught up with the precipitation so turning to rain from the west. I'll update on mesoscales, 950s, etc when I'm back in embra.

well the pub run is showing us what we have been waiting to see all winter retrogression of hieghts from scandi to greenland

edit: make that retrogresion from scandi to the usa

Snow at Forsinard earlier this evening; the rest of low level Caithness & Easter Ross got light to moderate patchy rain.

Cold out today, little more than 2C all day, but didn't feel cold due to cloud cover and relatively little wind.

Where's my best shout for a cloud-free mountain on Saturday? Cairngorms or north-west Highlands?

it would be good if it stayed in greenland but when it goes to the usa it isnt so good but it was the GFS and in FI so not a likely outcome

when looking at all the main models GFS, ECM and UKMO only taking to 144hr wouldnt go any further than that just now and all models show the PV segment over canada pulling away to the pole and all three show strong hieghts to our northeast and with how the upper air patterns are being forecast surely the only way ahead is for retrogresion from scandi to greenland and looks like our best shot all winter at setting up an OMEGA BLOCK and will hopefully show in the shorter term in the models very soon but knowing our luck and the way it has been that pesky PV wont pull out enough or work its way back into canada so its all to play for over the next few days to see where things will go.

was going to post pics aswell to show but for some reason i cant get any of they things to work on here just now.

Here's the issue:

13020721_0718.gif

After tonight we're looking at a period of 48 or so hours where conditions will not be conduicive to low ground or even much in the way of high ground snow:

13020918_0718.gif

Hard to say exactly how things will play out regarding the front, with potential for it to move further east and affect us (I personally would be against that as it looks initially to be something of a poison chalice until the colder air digs in from the east) but it is an option. Up to then, not too bad for the south and the east tomorrow as far as cloud cover is concerned:

13020815_0718.gif

However Saturday looks pretty rank, with full cloud cover and on and off drizzle:

13020918_0718.gif

13020912_0718.gif

My one main issue with Sunday into Monday is the cloud cover preceeding it as we're going to have to rely on either a rain to snow event or a 'snow with temperatures initially quite a bit above 0C to start with' southeasterly turning easterly. However, if it plays out as currently progged I don't see too many issues with snowfall once the -8C line crosses. The cold pool looks like the real deal this time:

gfs-3-78.png?18

gfs-13-84.png?18

So all in all, if we can weather the rough start, a 24-36 hour (with potential for extensions for good behaviour) easterly with a strongish flow and sub -8C uppers.

Something to note too - if the BBC forecast talks about it being mostly dry, take that with a bit of salt and the knowledge of other forecast dry easterlies:

Ally. Retrogression is good.

Retrogression is good, regression is bad, recession is the permanent state of the UK economy under a tory government. Simples!laugh.png

Because the economy wasn't on the road to recovery at all in the run-up to the 2010 election...

In a sense yes, although this is getting a bit off topic now so here's a chart:

  • April 2024 - Was it that cold overall? A look at the statistics

General perception from many is that April was a cold month, but statistics would suggest otherwise, with the average temperature for the whole month coming in just above the 30 year average for the UK as a whole.
