looking at the radar wonder if I should set up camp under the lamp post. Wife thinks I'm losing the plot, no dear I lost the plot when our snow went pete tong and descended on the channel islands along with all the other near misses. Last rant of the winter......er spring I promise!blum.gif

Nowhere near a 'classic' - Winter 1947 (the 'classic' bit) lasted for around 6 weeks, with loads of snow events and snow on the ground for weeks and affected our region particularly badly.

62/63 lasted 'forever' with bitter temps, many ice days and absolutely freezing at night, with snow, although not so many snowfalls as 47.

In my lifetime winters 78/79, 81, a couple more winters in 80s, 2009/10 and 2010/11 produced much more snow and freezing temps than this winter/early Spring.

Granted, to have 2 to 3 weeks in March this cold is exceptional, but snow-wise it's been rubbish IMBY.

Rest of the country, bar S Wales, SE England and ourselves have had pretty good snow events this March.

Well that's my take anyway.

Cheers BB

January was pretty special in this part of South Wales, 2 major snow events, 1 overnight and 1 daytime,

Since then a lot of days of falling snow, over 20 so far this winter but very little settled since Jan . (although was on M4 2 weeks ago, and it was down to 2 lanes by Membury due to snow)

I can understand the frustration, it is easier if no-one gets snow.

Has the snow that's slowly edged W/SW through the afternoon and evening, while developing further, been caused by a trough?

Whatever the cause, it seems to have stirred up the air enough to help the sky clear afterwards as we're now being treated to a wonderful

full moon on the first clear starry night for what seems an eternity!

I feel your pain! Had this happen 2 or 3 times this winter... Flipping boiler!! wallbash.gif

We've run out of bottled gas and they can't deliver until next Wednesday. But at least we've got the log burner. And we're away for 4 nights anyway so at least the hotel will be warm up in the Peak District...I hope.

just spotted this on slashdot

Scientists Link Cold Spring to Dramatic Sea Ice Loss"

Makes perfect sense to me. Think of all the extra moisture in the atmosphere from a larger area of exposed liquid water and how that could affect the development of weather systems and the patterns. But more significantly perhaps is that since the jet stream relies on a large temperature gradient, if the artic is significantly warmer, the gradient is reduced and so the jet stream is weaker and further south. I have seen some people before laugh at the idea that cold weather can happen as a consequence of global warming, but really it's the extreme weather in general that is a consequence of the rising temperatures.

Just saw this on Ian's twitter feed;

"Notorious winter 1962/63 was the main course following the starter of March 1962. Hoping that menu isn't back on."

Who's looking forward to next winter then? :p :p

It was nice to see a little grainy snow, stopped now, looking at the radar it's decided it doesn't like Exeter and gone around it lol!

Light snow, gone on long enough to give light dusting on grass

That is down at sea level

Heavier radar returns over the sea, and english channel, all going to waste over ocean
