Apparently torrential hail near newcastle....

Yes it's all going off in the North of England thread, thunder, lightning, hail and a little wet snow.  Will be interesting traveling over the North Yorks Moors no doubt...

Surely the Pennines are going to gobble up those showers before they make any impact here...but then again....?  Hail mixed in with a recent shower so if temps fall a little and those showers keep intact they could produce something wintry, especially for high ground.

Weather warning for the Pennines including eastern Gtr Manchester, so wait and see what happens.

The North Sea is not freezing, in fact it is anomalously warm, as most of the waters are around Britain, due to the warm summer. Ironically, as I have explained before, if it wasn't for the anomalously warm waters, then we wouldn't have the showers, or at least not as many.

some heavy rain and hail showers before. The temperature didn't really drop in the showers which was surprising. Currently 7.1C with a strong NW wind.

Yes, that surprise me also, what with the intensity of the graupel here. Temp now 6.7°C and dry.

Radar shows the main area of showers tantalisingly close to the eastern edge of the region so any further westward movement may bring the higher parts of Eastern Greater Manchester, Lancashire Derbyshire etc at least a bit of snow but I would suspect that the problem tonight will be how high is higher.

In my opinion even my 300m ASL will not be sufficient for anything other than sleet or wet snow unless evaporative cooling plays a part.

Currently 3.4c here.

Looking at the radar the showers are heading south with very little westwards progress so on current set up, the Met Office yellow warning is bang on with little or no penetration over the Pennines into our region.

This may change in the coming couple of hours but little sign at present.

This alignment seems to be keeping the colder conditions to the east of the Pennines as well with my location still at 3.3c.

Looks like we're out of luck this time around.

Yeah I agree with this been watching the radar over the last 30 minutes and it looks like it comes close but no cigar.

Showers have finally arrived here but more wet than white and only sleet at best although it's a start I suppose.

Snowing at flash down road from me....

Down the road maybe but it's the additional 450 feet of altitude that's making the difference I suspect but hopefully you'll be in luck if it gets heavier. Our sleet has started to turn to large flakes of wet snow now so the necessary altitude seems to be dropping.
