Why is the upcoming cold blast of air any different from early February 2013?

Anyone remember the thundersnow that night? Thunder, lightning, heavy snow? That was a short cold burst from WNW, less cold uppers came the following afternoon, actually accompanied by snow on a trough.

The next morning.

What a vague map.

1cm of slushy temporary deposits isn't much information.

Like Weather History said take no notice of those precipitation maps as they were way out last time and I've very rarely known them to be right period, hence why I never go overboard when they are showing the NW taking a pasting  ( I know very rare also  ). :shok:

Reading between the lines on the models/met o, I think the best chance/conditions for more widespread sleet and snow showers looks to be between Thurs 3am to Thurs 9am. Accumulations near coasts doubtful.

I said earlier this cold spell should last at least a week and there may be other chances after tmr/thurs if we miss out. Yeh I am pretty much the same as you only other side of mersey, not great for snow round here. things need to always fall perfect for us

I'd say that's quite a realistic basic guide. 60% chance of accumulative snow for lowland areas or below about 150m.

Considering snowfall will be in the form of showers its nigh on impossible to predict amounts.

There will be heavy snow showers and some will see more than others.

The BBC graphics are representative of where the showers are likely to be focused but it's far from exact or definitive detail.

Personally I'm quite optimistic with how things are looking for the next few days.

Thats 2cm more than we've had here for 3 years

well I don't call 2cm of slush a result its not snow...what you can play out in with the kids it was the equivalent to a worse sloppy version of a unflavoured slush puppy unless you count the yellow bits...then it froze and was deathly to walk in.
