Wow 12z GFS is incredible, here's hoping the warmth/sun last's into next weekend! was gorgeous down in London yesterday even got a bit of a tan which is surprising for so late in the year!

ECM pants, GFS on a wobbly, model experts tend to suggest ECM is best in FI

Lovely day here to be playing golf. Absolutely ideal.

Just got back to see the harvest moon looking down through one or two trails of cirrostratus slowly moving east -.despite the cu nimbus, have been moving to the west all day.

Anyway the temps are falling rapidly now at 9.8C. Will reset my min from last night to see if I can get my first frost.

I will be up about 3:00 to see the eclipse. Good luck to everyone!

Need about another 10 hours to be sunnier than August here, again. Its almost the norm now that September is sunnier, September 2008 was the dullest September since 1993 yet it was still sunnier than August!

There was ice on top of the car at 6am. Not seen that in September for a long, long time.

It's looking likely that the highest maximum recorded here this September, 18.2c on the 10th and 11th, will be the lowest for the month since 1995 when the max' was 17.6c.

I'm up in Leeds now for University and one thing I have definitely noticed so far is the amount of sunshine here, or maybe that is just because we are having a more settled spell anyway.

Probably won't be posting in here much till Christmas period now

Pretty sure thats just because its settled. In fact a few days ago Leeds area was plagued by cloud all day whilst we were very sunny. Its never going to be as sunny and warm up in Leeds really!

real test is next week, when we are back to normal, with low pressure and Atlantic air, probably find Leeds is sunnier, certainly drier if not dry

Well the weekend was great. Lots going on for me and had very little sleep. Just 5 hours sleep Friday night, just 90mins on Saturday night due to holding a car boot sale on Sunday morning then a very late bed time last night (or this morning) at 5.30am due to the eclipse.

See some of my photos from last night here:

It's sunnier here than it is there on average so you're absolutely wrong. My nearest Met station has 1570 hours of sun on an average year. Around Birmingham it's more like 1400.

And were very often much warmer than you - or just as warm.

possibly not as warm but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be sunnier?

I stand corrected a bit on the sunshine amounts. However the Midlands is more than just Birmingham. Our closest station here is actually Hayley Green and  Pershore. Average temperatures are higher both by day in almost all months and most months for night. Sunshine amounts are slightly lower but over 1500 and Birmingham's closest station is nearer 1500 than 1400 (Winterbourne). Leeds central location in Northern England around the Pennines has to help otherwise it would be duller imo. Still, The Midlands and The South have come off better than the north for cloud and especially fog in this spell so far.

One only needs to look at the climate maps to see The Mids and South are generally warmer and sunnier overall. http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/climate/gcqd2d0td

Here shows historical weather conditions well:

Birmingham Max's Since 14th Sept: http://www.timeanddate.com/weather/uk/birmingham/historic

15,17,16,17,18,19,17,16,15,17,16,16,17,17,18

Leeds Max's Since 14th Sept: http://www.timeanddate.com/weather/uk/leeds/historic

12,15,15,14,15,17,15,14,15,14,13,14,15,14,15

Yup it has. Lots of fog here here recently that won't clear until 1pmish.

We may all be joining you with the fog been more extensive for the Midlands come tomorrow morning, but will soon burn off by mid to late morning to leave a sunny day for all :)

Another lovely day albeit a bit breezier but seems to have calmed down again now. Looks great for another 4 days or so yet. Signs of increased warmth next week and possible more HP after that? :D

Thick fog all morning which then cleared almost on the stroke of midday. A lot of broken St after the fog lifted but it's now sunny.

  • April 2024 - Was it that cold overall? A look at the statistics

General perception from many is that April was a cold month, but statistics would suggest otherwise, with the average temperature for the whole month coming in just above the 30 year average for the UK as a whole. A warm first half to to the month averaged out the cold second half. View the full blog here
